Wait till next year to see if Pineda gets up to speed

Big hits for Cano, Ibanez, Bichette as Yankees beat Astros
KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez each had two-run homers, 19-year-old Dante Bichette Jr. connected on the first two pitches he saw this spring and the New York Yankees beat the Houston Astros 11-9 in a game Saturday shortened to eight innings by rain. The Yankees and Astros combined… Continue reading

Dante Jr.: I got lucky
Modesty is a wonderful quality in a person and judging by Dante Bichette Jr.’s first post-game interview, he has it in abundance. The Yankees first pick in the 2011 draft (51st overall), the son of former major league slugger Dante Bichette, who is a close friend of Joe Girardi’s, belted the first two pitches he saw in his first two spring training at-bats with the majr league club out of the wind tunnel known as Osceola County Stadium. The first may have needed a little help but the second created a jet stream of its own, sailing over the centerfield fence, 410 feet away, and over the batter’s eye some distance beyond that. 3 Stars: DBJ, Cano, Ibanez
There were 30 hits, 20 runs and nine home runs in today’s Yankees-Astros game at Kissimmee, and they didn’t even play all nine innings. A Wizard-of-Oz-esque rain and wind storm caused the umpires to wave it off in the top of the ninth with the Yankees leading, 11-9, and trust me, nobody on the Houston side raised a fuss. So naturally, our three stars today are all hitters. Star #1 — Dante Bichette Jr.: With his parents in the crowd, the Yankees first pick in the 2011 draft got his first two at-bats in a spring training game, saw his first two pitches, and hit both of them out of the yard. Yankees Pummel Astros 11-9, Offense Appears in Mid-Season Form
Today, 21-year-old Astros pitcher Jordan Lyles took on the Yankees . It did not go well. The offense looked fantastic today; I know the Astros are projected to lose 100 games, but regardless. They notched 11 runs against some admittedly-weak pitching, including eight off of Lyles, who was considered the Astros’ top prospect before 2011. The Yankees notched 11 hits against him, including homers to deep right field by Robinson Cano and Raul Ibanez , both of whom had two hits on the day. Cano’s success is unsurprising, but it’s good to see that Ibanez appears to be out of his slump, although he won’t get to face youngsters like Lyles every day once the season starts. Curtis Granderson also had three hits in three at bats, raising his Spring Training batting average to .381. Grandy’s looked great all Spring and doesn’t look to have missed a beat from last season. Mark Teixeira also had a single to center and a double to the opposite field. We’re all hoping that Tex can successfully revitalize the opposite-field power he always had before playing every day in front of that Yankee Stadium short porch in right field. Dante Bichette, Jr. announced his Spring Training debut with not one, but two homers against Astros pitching. He replaced Eduardo Nunez at third base in the fifth inning, and then greeted Astros scrub Ruben Alaniz with a long home run to center. In his second at-bat, against projected setup man Brandon Lyon (who had just given up a homer to .455 hitter Jose Gil , a mystery in itself), he homered to deep left. See you in a few years, DBJ. Keep doing that. Adam Warren did not look good in his final start of the Spring–you simply cannot be considered MLB-ready if you give up six runs on ten hits to the punchless Astros. Warren gave up homers to the corpse of Carlos Lee and Justin Ruggiano , who has only six more major-league homers than I do. Clay Rapada , who hadn’t given given up a hit to a lefty all Spring, allowed a homer to lefty-swinging Brian Bogusevic (now that Cesar Cabral is injured, of course). Rapada gets a pass since it was the first mistake he’s made all Spring, but I guess now Girardi can acknowledge that his second lefty isn’t perfect. The game ended during the top of the ninth due to rain. Best to get that atmospheric nonsense out of the way before it affects the regular season. Continue reading

What Pineda/Cabral injuries mean to the Yankees roster
The injuries to Michael Pineda and Cesar Cabral certainly change the way the Yankees will plan out there roster. It sorted out the rotation immediately, but it does more than just that. Clay Rapada seems to be the biggest beneficiary as the lone lefty competing for a spot behind Boone Logan. However, manager Joe Girardi did not commit to Rapada and left open the possibility that the Yankees would fill one of the two open roster spots another way. So who else might take on of the two spots vacated by Pineda and Cabral? There are a few possibilities. There is a good chance that either Adam Warren, David Phelps, or D.J. Mitchell are added as a long-reliever. It’s hard to say which one exactly. It is possible that two of the three make the team. One scenario would be Warren or Phelps as the long-man and Mitchell as a typical middle innings reliever. There is also Justin Maxwell and to a lesser extent Chris Dickerson. Both have solid upside as a spare outfielder. Right now the … Continue reading

Pineda injury sets Yankees rotation
Joe Girardi likes to say that things have a way of working themselves out, and in the case of his pitching rotation, they certainly seem to have done that. With the injury to Michael Pineda, what had seemed to be a difficult decision for the manager — trying to fit six pegs into five slots — suddenly became an automatic. Without Pineda in the mix, the Yankees rotation is as follows: As previously planned, CC Sabathia opens the season Friday against the Rays in St. Continue reading
