Another inning, another error for Nunez

In the first inning, it was his glove. In the second inning, it was his arm. Eduardo Nunez committed his second error of the game, and it again led to an unearned run for the Rays. With a runner on first and no outs, Nunez fielded a grounder and had enough time to get the ball to second base for a force-out. But Nunez’s throw sailed into the outfield. The lead runner eventually scored on a two-out Sean Rodriguez single. The Rays lead the Yankees 2-0, heading into the bottom of the second. Continue reading

Nunez error costs Yankees in first inning

Another start for Eduardo Nunez, and another costly error in the field. Nunez, starting at third base to give Alex Rodriguez a half-day off (A-Rod is the DH), booted a routine ground ball in the top of the first inning against the Rays on Thursday night. There were runners on first and second base at the time, so the error allowed the Rays to load the bases. The next batter, Carlos Pena, drove home a run with a single to right field — but Nick Swisher gunned down the next runner at the plate to end the inning. Continue reading

Buzz: Betances pitches well

A recurring feature of the blog, Buzz will follow Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances, as well as other top Yankee prospects, all season long. Dellin Betances had a great start, going eight innings, allowing one run, striking out seven and just walking two. Betances is now 2-2 with a 5.20 ERA. Continue reading

Pettitte: I feel terrible for Mo

Andy Pettitte spoke to reporters and reiterated much of what he said with Michael Kay on Wednesday. He is very “excited” about Sunday and will have many family and friends there. As for the biggest news of the season, Pettitte feels as bad as all the Yankee fans that Mariano Rivera is done for the season. “That’s terrible,” Pettitte said. “Obviously, my decision to comeback was made between me and my family and a lot of thinking about that. Mo was pushing really hard [for me] to try to comeback, also, to try to do this thing one more time here and try to bring hopefully a championship for New York. Continue reading

Sabathia, Stewart paired together again

Chris Stewart will again be behind the plate with CC Sabathia on the mound Thursday night. It’s the fifth consecutive time that the Yankees’ ace has been paired with the team’s backup catcher — but manager Joe Girardi insists that Stewart is not Sabathia’s “personal catcher.” “It’s just worked out (that way),” Girardi said before Thursday’s game against the Rays. “A lot of the starts that I’ve chose to play Chris have been with CC, and have been against left-handers, because if you look at Chris’ track record, the success has been more against left-handers. New York Yankees: Injury setbacks continue

BRETT GARDNER AT-BAT. The New York Yankees, like the other 29 MLB teams, are not devoid of injuries but the Bombers are definitely one of the harder hit clubs so far in 2012. There was some good news on the way, as both outfielders Brett Gardner and utility man Eric Chavez looked to be close to returning to the Bronx. I was hoping that Yankee fans would see them both back on the field by the end of the weekend, which also happens to be the official return of southpaw Andy Pettitte, who will make his first start on Sunday since retiring after the 2010 season. Well, that well-deserved and much-needed excitement is no longer, as ESPN.com reported that Gardner had to leave what was supposed to be his last Triple-A rehab start with a swollen elbow last night. And now Marc Craig of the Star Ledger just confirmed that Gardner is getting another MRI on his right arm, as the swelling and soreness was still present today. This is a total bummer, as the Yankees were really looking forward to G… Continue reading

Girardi: Robertson ‘doubtful’ for tonight

It appears David Robertson won’t get a chance to redeem himself on Thursday, one day after blowing his first save since taking over the closer role for the injured Mariano Rivera. “I need our guys to play catch and see how they feel,” said Yankees manager Joe Girardi, three hours before Thursday night’s game against the Rays. “For me, he’s doubtful. But I’ll talk to him after he goes out there today.” The reason is not because Robertson gave up four runs in 2/3 of an inning on Wednesday. Continue reading

Gardner has setback and will get another MRI

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner looked poised to rejoin the Yankees this week after a pair of Triple-A rehab games. It’s not going to happen though as the speedy outfielder had swelling and soreness in his elbow following Wednesday night’s game and will go in for another MRI, according to Chad Jennings of the Journal News. This is terrible news for the Yankees because despite the fact that Gardner is not a superstar, his defense has been a big part of what has made the Yankees successful over the past two seasons. In his place they have used Andruw Jones and the terrible fielder Raul Ibanez, which hasn’t been terrible offensively, but has been a disaster and cost the Yankees quite a few runs defensively. Gardner’s absense has also meant significantly more playing time for Eduardo Nunez, which further hurts the team’s defense. Hopefully he just needs another week or two, but anytime an elbow injury like this lingers Tommy John Surgery immediately come… Continue reading
