Teixeira back in Yankees’ lineup

Dropped as low as seventh in the batting order for the first time in eight years, Mark Teixeira didn’t think it would make much a difference on what pitches he’ll see. ”I’m still Mark Teixeira,” the New York Yankees first baseman said. ”I still put up some pretty good numbers in my career, so I don’t think they’re going to just start underhanding it to me. I wish they would, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.” Bothered by coughing and a bronchial illness since the first week of the season, the two-time All-Star is batting .226 – 54 points below his career average – with five homers and 20 RBIs. He was limited to one pinch-hit appearance as the Yankees lost two of three to Cincinnati during the weekend series, then returned to the lineup at first base for Monday night’s game against Kansas City. Teixeira had not started a game that low in the batting order since May 13, 2004, when he hit eighth for Texas at Tampa Bay, according to STATS LLC. Alex Rodriguez appeared to pout when then-manager Joe Torre dropped him from cleanup to eighth for Game 4 of the 2006 AL division series against Detroit. ”It’s really not a big deal to me. We all know I’m not 100 percent,” Teixeira said. ”At the end of the day, we have to win games. If switching up the lineup helps, then great, because we’ve got to start winning.” New York began the night 21-20, 5 1/2 games out of first in the AL East. The Yankees had just six hits in their last 59 at-bats (.102) with runners in scoring position. Teixeira was hitting just .205 with RISP. ”Maybe people will stop asking him so many questions all the time,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ”He’s been the focus of our lineup, and if the other guys were hitting he probably wouldn’t be a focus. I mean, there’s a lot of other guys that are struggling in those situations, some worse than he is. So I just thought, you know what, he hasn’t played in three days. I’m going to move him down a little bit and see what happens.” Teixeira said the three days off from the starting lineup helped him feel a little better. He’s stopped taking antibiotics, and doctors have said rest is the best option. ”I’ve talked to every doctor out there,” Teixeira said, ”and most of them said the same thing: Rest would have helped right from the beginning. That didn’t happen, and that’s why stuff like this kind of hangs around.” Rodriguez also has been scuffling. He’s hitting .270 with five homers and 15 RBIs, and has just one home run since April 27. ”These are the guys that are expected to be huge in our order,” Girardi said. Raul Ibanez, with nine homers and 27 RBIs, was moved up to fifth. Teixeira had hit fifth 33 times, with three games in the No. 3 hole and one start at cleanup. ”You always have to be concerned how a player handles it,” Girardi said. ”I’m not so sure that you would say that Mark likes it, but he said OK. And I asked him a couple different times.” NOTES: Girardi said OF Brett Gardner (elbow) and RHP David Robertson (ribcage) likely will start rehabilitation assignments Thursday in Tampa, Fla. Tex: My numbers will be there

Through 41 games, Mark Teixeira is batting just .226 with 5 home runs and 20 RBIs. His slugging percentage is a mere .384, lower than every Yankee regular other than Russell Martin. Simple arithmetic says that at this pace, Teixeira will end up with about 20 home runs and 80 RBIs for 2012, the worst numbers of his career. Still, Teixeira insists that at season’s end, his line will look more like it usually does; for the first nine years of his career, he was a career . Continue reading

Tarp is off, and the lines are on

The rain has stopped and it looks like the game will start on or close to the scheduled time of 7:08 first pitch. The grounds crew is putting down the foul lines and batter’s boxes and some of the Royals are on the field warming up, so it looks like we will at least see the start of a ballgame tonight. Breaking: Banuelos, Nunez placed on Scranton/Wilkes-Barre DL

Donnie Collins of the Scranton Times-Tribune tweeted a few minutes ago that the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees have placed both Manny Banuelos and Eduardo Nunez on the disabled list. For Banuelos, the move is retroactive to Saturday, while Nunez’s move is retroactive to Sunday. Nunez has been dealing with a thumb issue. The reason for Banuelos hitting the DL is unknown, though it may have something to do with the back issue that he missed time with earlier this season. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an official update from the team on Banuelos. Continue reading

Mark Teixeira back in Yankees’ lineup

Mark Teixeira is back in the New York Yankees’ starting lineup after being limited to one pinch-hit appearance during the weekend series against Cincinnati because of bronchial issues. Teixeira was set to bat seventh and play first base in Monday night’s game against Kansas City. Bothered by coughing since almost the start of the season, the two-time All-Star is batting .226 with five homers and 20 RBIs. Yankees manager Joe Girardi hoped keeping Teixeira out of the lineup would help Teixeira’s cough to get better. Continue reading

Yankees Game 42 Lineup: 05/21/12

Hiroki Kuroda has had significant success at home this season. The Yankees need this from him again tonight in Bronx. After five strong innings of work, C.C. Sabathia lost his command in sixth and dug the Yankees a hole they couldn’t crawl out of, resulting in Sabathia’s second straight loss. The series with the Reds didn’t go as planned and the Yankees lost two out of three games as their troubles driving in runs continues. At the quarter-way mark through the 2012 season, the Yankees are in desperate need of a turnaround and will have to start it tonight in the Bronx with a fresh three-game series against the Kansas City Royals. The last time they met in Kansas City, the series was split and the Yankees went home without their closer, losing Marinao Rivera to injury. Back at home for this set, they’ll surely be hoping for a more positive outcome this time. Hiroki Kuroda plays the starting role for the Yankees tonight, and will attempt to bounce back from a m… Continue reading

What To Do With Dellin Betances?

Dellin Betances’ command problems may have him ticketed for the bullpen someday (Photo: Bronx Baseball Daily) Not long ago, Dellin Betances was considered to be one of the two best pitching prospects in the Yankees system, and perhaps even one of the best in all of baseball. He earned a September call-up with the Yankees last season, making two appearances, including one start. Despite a decent ERA (3.70) and batting average against under .220 between Trenton and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2011, some of the more advanced statistical numbers should have shown warning signs ahead – warning signs that are now very, very evident even to the casual fan that has seen Betances pitch. After a lights-out 2010 campaign, Betances solidified himself as a top prospect in the Yankees organization. He appeared to continue that dominance throughout 21 starts at Trenton, but a deeper look into his numbers suggests he wasn’t as great as he seemed. Opponents hit just .219 off him, and he struck out … Continue reading

Raining in the Bronx

Duh. Unless you live in you live in a room without windows, you know what I’m talking about. The forecast calls for periods of rain all night but it has stopped and started several times this afternoon, raising the likelihood that at least some of this game will be played. And the Royals making their only trip to NYC these three days, I’m sure every effort will be made to play this one, which probably means a long, late, wet night. Stay tuned for periodic updates, or just look out your window. Continue reading
