Yankees Game 52 Lineup: 06/02/12

Hiroki Kuroda goes tonight for the Yankees and is still trying to win consecutive starts for the first time this season After a 9-4 dominating victory over the Detroit Tigers last night, the Yankees have now won seven of their last nine games and are inching their way closer to the top of the AL East division ladder. Just 1.5 games back now, the teams offensive turnaround has been the driving factor in their recent success. In five of those seven wins, the bombers have put up six or more runs, giving the pitching staff some breathing room and allowing them to win by a more comfortable margin. In the second game of their three-game set on the road with the Tigers, the Yankees will look to continue their loose approach at the plate and carry the team to another victory. Hiroki Kuroda will be on the mound tonight for New York and he looked untouchable in his last start, as he got his first win on the road and shutout the A’s for more than eight scoreless innings. Now that he got … Continue reading

Could Yankees go after Garza?

To me the biggest concern for the Yankees is their starting pitching. After CC Sabathia, do you really have a lot of faith in any of the Yankees’ other starters? I don’t, except for maybe Andy Pettitte, if he can stay healthy. So with the Cubs awful, Matt Garza could be on the block. This is from ESPN’s MLB Trade Rumors, via CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman. The New York Yankees will certainly attempt to improve their pitching staff this summer and may focus on starters. Continue reading

Born to be a Bomber: Curtis Granderson

Curtis Granderson has become one of the league’s top sluggers since joining the Yankees, proving he fits perfectly in pinstripes Last night was a homecoming of sorts for Curtis Granderson, as he returned to Detroit to face his original team, the Tigers, and he certainly made them pay big time, making them regret ever letting him go. Casey Cosby made his first MLB start last night for Detroit and his nerves were on display. In the second inning, Crosby walked four straight batters and with the bases loaded, Curtis Granderson approached the plate. He salivated as he entered the batters box seeing all those potential runs in front of him. Then with one pitch, he fed his hunger, as he ripped into the ball sending it soaring to deep right field for a grand-slam, home-run that gave the Yankees a healthy lead which they maintained for the win. In 2010, the speedy center-fielder, Granderson, was traded to the Yankees in a monster three-team deal. It was a great pick up for the organizat… Continue reading

All In For Jorge Soler?

Big MLB news today, as Jorge Soler has officially been declared a free agent. Soler was a hot topic in the off-season, as many fans discussed the possibility of signing Soler instead of his fellow Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes . Cespedes ended up signing with the Oakland Athletics , while Soler had trouble being declared a free agent. Now that Soler is available, the Yankees should be all in. The pressing need for the Yankees right now is outfield depth. Slade Heathcott is the big outfield name, but the 2009 first round draft pick is currently out with a shoulder injury. Melky Mesa and Zoilo Almonte (both fantastic names) are both on the 40-man roster, but neither are touted as future MLB stalwarts. For reference Mesa is hitting .248/.317/.434 in AA, while Almonte is hitting .278/.326/.405 after getting off the DL yesterday. Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein has the scoop on Soler, as evidenced by a series of his tweets. Kevin Goldstein ‏ @ Kevin_Goldstein Source indicates that Jorge Soler’s agent, Barry Praver, has requested that offers for his client be submitted by Thursday, June 7. Kevin Goldstein ‏ @ Kevin_Goldstein Cubs , Phillies , Red Sox , Marlins , Blue Jays . @ NoSeeUmCreek : @ Kevin_Goldstein Instead of asking abt every team, who are faves for Soler? Kevin Goldstein ‏ @ Kevin_Goldstein Mild ones, yes. RT @ yakovsportsblog : @ Kevin_Goldstein Are the Yankees Soler suiters? Kevin Goldstein ‏ @ Kevin_Goldstein VG athlete, RF profile, massive raw power. RT @ Mr_OH10 : @ Kevin_Goldstein what’s the book on Soler? Also, the salary will not count against the new IFA cap, as long as Soler is signed by early July. Soler is expected to start in low or high A, and could get up to $30 million if a team gets desperate enough. Follow me after the jump for more. The price Soler demands will be the main factor for the Yankees in all likelihood, unless they do not show interest for reasons we do not know. The Yankees have to deal with Nick Swisher’s expiring contract, as well as the futures of Curtis Granderson and Robinson Cano . While Soler would be a fantastic addition to the farm system, one would have to think the Yankees would put their major league roster ahead of their minor league depth, given their line of thinking. Based on various scouting reports Soler looks like a future MLB starter for some team in the outfield, and I hope that team is the Yankees. Thoughts? Continue reading

Soler system coming to Bronx?

Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, 20, is now a free agent, according to Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. The Yankees are expected to be one of the teams in on Soler and, their interest could be heightened, because of the bidding will be before the new amateur signing cap is put into place. In other words, the Yankees can go all guns a blazing if they want. Soler is supposedly going to be a major league starting outfielder one day, but we know this is all very subjective. 5 Things We Learned About the Yankees in 2012

There are some things a man just knows.  Old people (37 years and beyond) can’t play baseball, can’t hit for average, and can’t rank in the top ten in any offensive category (except maybe strike-outs).  There is an inverse relationship between the amount of tattoos on a pitcher’s throwing arm and his ERA. Hitting with RISP is an important and useful statistic. And finally, the Mayan end-of-times prophecies are upon us. So it is with the aforementioned in mind that I make the following, completely random, observations: Derek Jeter is awesome.  At age 37, his .336 batting average ranks sixth in Major League Baseball and his 71 hits (as of the time of this writing) ranks second.  That young-stud Robinson Cano meanwhile is batting a respectable .286 but ranks 44 spots behind Grandpa Jeter at 50th in the majors. Phil Hughes has improved to putrid. His 2.05 HR/9 is the absolute worst in baseball.  Take heart though, his 5.64 ERA is only the ninth-worst in the majors. C.C. Sabathia h… Continue reading
