Rays Take First Place With 8-4 Victory Over The Orioles

The Rays defeated the Orioles 8-4 thanks to the offense, poor Orioles defense, and a strong performance by Matt Moore who worked 6 solid innings giving up 2R/1ER on 7 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3 in improving his record to 2-5. Jake Arrieta took the loss working only 4.2 innings giving up 4R/4ER on only 2 hits striking out 3 and walking 4 dropping his record to 2-7. The Rays end the day in first place in the AL East by 1 game over the Baltimore Orioles , 1.5 games over the Yankees , and 3 games ahead of the Blue Jays and Red Sox. It has been a crazy year in the AL East – on April 30th the Rays were 15-8 and held a 3.5 game lead over the 11-11 Boston Red Sox . Today, the Rays are the same 8 games over .500 (31-23) and lead the Boston Red Sox who are 2 games over .500 by 3 games. This is the latest an American League division has been separated by 3 or fewer games since division realignment in 1994. Since realignment the latest date when the top 5 teams of a division were separated by 3 games was the NL Central on July 2, 2009. Matt Moore appears to be turning a corner. In his last two outings he has worked 13IP giving up 4R/3ER, while striking out 14K and walking 4. Joe Maddon removed Moore after only 93 pitches (62 for strikes) which reminded me of how Maddon used to handle young guys by getting them out of the game on a high note to give them something to build on. Additionally, one could say that Moore’s 93 pitches were thrown with a higher amount of stress since there were baserunners in each of his 6 innings. There were a number of visits to the mound today by Jose Molina and Jim Hickey. Could the Rays be looking to slow Moore down before his struggles consume him? I don’t know the answer to that but it is nice to see a veteran catcher taking a young pitcher under his wing. Carlos Pena had a productive day out of the leadoff spot driving in a run with a sacrifice fly and drawing two walks. Hopefully, this will be the last day that we see a lineup that has Pena’s name etched in at the top as Desmond Jennings should be set to return to the Rays lineup vs the Yankees on Tuesday. I’m guessing that Maddon returns to his September lineup with DJ/BJ at the top but others may feel that not to be the case. A lot of discussion about the Rays against left handed pitching in 2012 – especially heading to New York to see Andy Pettitte and C.C. Sabathia. Against left handed starters the Rays have a record of 8-11 while a much better record of 23-12 against right handed starters. Although the story may be that left handed pitchers shut the Rays down the numbers don’t support that story. Entering Sunday the Rays had a slash line of .233/.330/.378 vs LHP and .239/.317/.396 vs RHP. Game Details After The Jump The game started off with an all too familiar tone. The Rays fell behind early when Matt Wieters delivered a solo homer off Matt Moore to begin the 2nd inning and Jake Arrieta retired the first 9 Rays hitters. Carlos Pena worked a walk to lead off the 4th inning and B.J. Upton followed with a single. After a wild pitch advanced Pena to 3rd and Upton to 2nd Matt Joyce lofted a sacrifice fly to centerfielder Adam Jones who overthrew the ball trying to nail the tagging Upton which allowed Upton to come home and score and the Rays were up 2-1. Endy Chavez reached base on a throwing error by shortstop Elliot Johnson to lead off the fifth inning and advanced to second on a groundout by Adam Jones. With first base open the Rays elected to pitch around Matt Wieters and face Mark Reynolds who lined a single to score Chavez and tie the score at 2-2. With one out in the fifth Will Rhymes and Elliot Johnson drew back to back walks and Jose Molina sent what looked like a double play ball to 3rd baseman Steve Tolleson but Elliot Johnson came hustled down to second and used a (legal) aggressive slide to break up the double play. Carlos Pena walked to load the bases and B.J. Upton laced a double down the left field line to drive in Rhymes and Molina to give the Rays a 4-2 lead. Ben Zobrist led off the 6th for the Rays with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Luke Scott . Zobrist scored after a pickoff attempt by Matt Wieters hit him in the back causing the ball to ricochet into the outfield. With one out Hideki Matsui singled and was replaced by pinch runner Rich Thompson. With Will Rhymes due up Buck Showalter went to right handed pitcher Luis Ayala and Joe Maddon recognizing the 2011 reverse splits of Ayala pinch hit Sean Rodriguez who singled with Thompson advancing to 2nd. Elliot Johnson chased Thompson home on a single and Sean Rodriguez came home when Steve Tolleson could not handle a ground ball off the bat of Jose Molina. Elliot Johnson had advanced to 3rd on the Tolleson error came home to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carlos Pena to give the Rays an 8-2 lead. Mark Reynolds led off the 8th inning with a homer off Wade Davis to cut the lead to 8-3 and in the 9th Matt Wieters singled off Fernando Rodney to drive in Robert Andino to cut the lead to 8-4 before Rodney got Mark Reynolds to ground out to shortstop Elliot Johnson to end the game. Fan runs on field, fist bumps Nick Swisher

Here’s a dumb fan in Detroit that ran on to the field to fist bump New York Yankees right fielder, Nick Swisher. This happened with two outs in the ninth inning in Sunday’s game against the Tigers. Looks like Swisher allowed it, but was probably pretty nervous. Can’t trust a drunk, ya know? He’ll spend the Continue reading

Girardi Believes Joba Will Pitch This Year

From Roger Rubin:With reliever David Robertson and outfielder Brett Gardner close to beginning minor league rehab assignments, Joe Girardi is asked daily about their progress. On Saturday he brought other, unexpected, rehab news: reliever Joba Chamberlain is throwing pitches from halfway up a mound. And Girardi believes the righthander will return and contribute for the Bombers this season. “I believe he’ll be back,” Girardi said. “I am no doctor, no rehab therapist, but just knowing Joba I believe he’s going to be back for us this year.” Chamberlain was working his way back from Tommy John surgery when he suffered a freak right ankle injury in March. It was called an “open dislocation” where the bone was exposed and there was considerable bleeding, although he claimed both of those aspects were untrue. The righthander is using a small brace on the ankle and isn’t yet throwing 100%. Girardi said Chamberlain’s mobility isn’t to the point where he can run a sprint, but still … Continue reading

Game 53: Hughes Goes The Whole Way

New York Yankees 5 — Detroit Tigers 1 Phil Hughes went the distance in today’s 5-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. In a match-up between reigning Cy Young and MVP winner Justin Verlander against Yankees starter Phil Hughes, Hughes outdueled Verlander. In his first (actual) complete game, Hughes only gave up 1 run on 4 hits with 8 strikeouts. The lone run came on a deep home run to right field by Prince Fielder in the 4th inning. Today’s start was a great bounce back start after giving up a career-high 11 hits to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Hughes was able to silence one of the best hitters in the league, Miguel Cabrera, including striking him out two times. Derek Jeter immediately put a sour start to Verlander’s start as he took the first pitch deep to right field to give the Yankees an early lead. The Yankees managed two early runs off of Verlander and Alex Rodriguez also found a pitch to hit. The Yankees third baseman hit a home run to deep center… Continue reading

Verlander roughed up by Yankees

Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez each homered off Justin Verlander, and Phil Hughes pitched a four-hitter to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Sunday. Jeter homered on the first pitch of the game, and Rodriguez hit a long solo shot in the third inning. Hughes (5-5) didn’t need much support in throwing his first career complete game of nine innings – last Aug. 2 he went all six innings in a rain-shortened win over the White Sox. Hughes struck out eight and walked three. He threw a career-high 123 pitches. Verlander (5-4) allowed five runs – three earned – and nine hits in 6 1-3 innings. He’s now lost three straight starts for the first time since 2008. Prince Fielder homered for the Tigers. Jeter had two hits, and his homer gave him his 1,799th run, tying him with Ted Williams for 17th on the career list. Verlander was laboring from the start, giving up an opposite-field home run to Jeter and then walking Curtis Granderson on four pitches. After another walk and a passed ball, Mark Teixeira hit a one-out sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Rodriguez’s homer easily cleared the fence in left-center and went an estimated 447 feet. The ball bounced high off the brick wall where retired numbers are displayed – right between Hank Greenberg’s No. 5 and Charlie Gehringer’s No. 2. It was the third mammoth homer at Comerica Park in less than 24 hours after Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera hit two similar shots to center Saturday night. Fielder made it 3-1 with a 415-foot homer to right in the fourth, but the Yankees weren’t done. Robinson Cano’s two-out triple in the fifth brought Granderson home from second, and Cano also scored on the play when second baseman Danny Worth’s throw to third skipped past for an error. Verlander extended his streak to 54 starts of at least six innings in the regular season, but he hasn’t been at his best lately. In his previous outing at Boston, he allowed five runs and 10 hits in six innings. In an April 27 start at New York, he gave up four earned runs in six innings in a no-decision against the Yankees. Hughes, meanwhile, has allowed at least one homer in all 11 starts this season, but he kept the banged-up Tigers off base for the most part. Detroit put outfielder Andy Dirks on the disabled list with tendinitis in his right Achilles. Catcher Alex Avila has also been out with right hamstring tightness. NOTES: A spectator ran on the field with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and approached Yankees RF Nick Swisher, then ran around the outfield a bit before being tackled by security personnel. … New York 3B Eric Chavez made a nice sliding catch of a foul ball in the second. … The Yankees and Tigers are both off Monday. New York hosts Tampa Bay on Tuesday night. Andy Pettitte (2-2) starts for the Yankees against James Shields (6-3). Detroit hosts Cleveland on Tuesday night. Drew Smyly (2-1) starts for the Tigers against Ubaldo Jimenez (5-4). Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Yankees 5, Tigers 1

WHAT IT MEANS: The Yankees had a great road trip, going 6-3. Best of all, they beat Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander 5-1 on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park. It allowed the Yankees to take two of three from the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees jumped on Verlander, who won the AL MVP and AL Cy Young last season. Derek Jeter hit the first pitch of the game for a leadoff homer. They led, 2-0, when Alex Rodriguez got into the act. He blasted a long home run to left-center. Continue reading

A-Rod blasts homer

Yankee fans should be excited after watching Alex Rodriguez blast a homer off Tigers’ ace Justin Verlander in the third inning to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead. A-Rod drilled a 3-1 pitch 447 feet over the fence in left-center field at Comerica Park. It hit the brick wall beyond the fence. It’s A-Rod’s second homer and the last three days. He had a two-run bomb in Friday night’s 9-4 victory. He now has 10 homers on the season. It was career number 638, fifth all time. Continue reading
