Ex Man Utd GK van der Gouw visits Yankees for BP

Raimond van der Gouw got an up close look at a big league ballclub in his first time at the ballpark. The former Manchester United goalkeeper watched from the field as the Yankees took batting practice before they played the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday night. ”I’m a sportsman, so I like to see a game,” van der Gouw said. ”I’m really looking forward to this.” He was visiting New York with his family and landed tickets through an acquaintance. The Yankees brought the 49-year-old Dutchman and his family onto the field, then gave him a tour of the stadium, including the broadcast booth, press box and the requisite stop at Monument Park. Van der Gouw played parts of six seasons with Manchester United, the English Premier League soccer team often compared to the Yankees for its success, and worldwide fan support. The Yankees have also embraced soccer recently. European champion Chelsea is set to play an exhibition against Paris Saint-Germain on July 22 in the first soccer game at the new Yankee Stadium. Spanish champion Real Madrid is going to play AC Milan on Aug. 8 in the Bronx as well. While those could be the first big-time soccer games for some Americans, van der Gouw was on the other side of the cross-cultural sports exchange. ”I know a little bit how it works because I’m a PE teacher,” van der Gouw said. ”I’ve done some teaching in baseball, in school.” Van der Gouw played for United from 1996-2002, often as a substitute goalkeeper, then spent a year at West Ham before returning to the Netherlands. He made 100 appearances for Apeldoorn before retiring after the 2007 season. In the closing minutes of his last appearance for Apeldoorn, van der Gouw scored his first and only professional goal, on a penalty kick. He is a goalkeeping coach for another of his former clubs, Vitesse. This was the first trip to New York for the van der Gouw family. He said in his first major league game he was hoping to see ”some excitement, home runs, scores, of course.” Before the game got going, he got to see the grounds crew at work, as a downpour caused the tarp to be laid out in a hurry. Later, a major-league quality rainbow appeared over the Bronx, glowing beyond the scoreboard in center field, with a secondary rainbow to the left of it. Not bad for a first trip to a major league stadium. On the eve of the European soccer championships, van der Gouw also had a prediction. ”I think they’re going to reach the final,” he said of his nation. ”Holland against Germany, that’s what I expect.” Continue reading

Garcia on bereavement list, Igarashi called up

The Yankees placed right-handed reliever Freddy Garcia on the bereavement list because of the death of his grandfather and recalled reliever Ryota Igarashi from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Igarashi was claimed off waivers from Toronto on May 29. The 33-year-old right-hander made two appearances with Toronto before he was designated for assignment. The 33-year-old has struck out 69 batters and walked 48 in 70 innings spread over parts of three seasons – all but an inning of which was with the New York Mets in 2010 and 2011. Garcia has pitched out of the bullpen since a rough April, and has made six appearances from May 2 until Tuesday, when he relieved Andy Pettitte and got the last five outs of a 7-0 win. Yankees 2012 39th round draft pick: Bo Decker

With their 39th round pick of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Bo Decker, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound outfielder out of East Ridge High School in Florida. This 19-year-old pitches and plays the outfield and is said to be an exceptional athlete who plays good defense. He had the second highest batting average in the schools history his junior year when he hit .421. This year his line was .375/.524/.578. He’s shot up quite a bit in the height and weight categories over the past two years and he’s still quite projectable. Pregame notes: Freddy, D-Rob, Joba, Aardsma

Freddy Garcia is not with the team, having gone on bereavement leave after the death of his grandfather in Venezuela. He is expected to be gone several days. In his absence, the Yankees have promoted RHP Ryota Igarashi from AAA Scranton, where he was 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA in three appearances, but get this — 11 Ks in 5IP. Mark Teixeira visited an ENT today — that’s an ear-nose-throat specialist — to find out the cause of his persistent cough and was told he has residual nerve damage to one of his vocal cords from the bronchial illness he has been battling all season. Yankees 2012 38th round draft pick: David Thompson

With their 38th round pick of the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected David Thompson, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound outfielder out of Westminster Christian High School in Florida. ESPNHS called this 18-year-old the state home run king of Florida. Some mock drafts actually had him go very high, but the fact that he’s a two sport recruit (he also plays football), he has already committed to the University of Miami, and his contract demands were supposed to be very high all caused him to slide way down in the draft. It doesn’t seem like the Yankees are going to sign him, but they probably wouldn’t have drafted him had they thought they didn’t at least have a chance. Yankees 2012 37th round draft pick: Charles Basford

With their 37th round pick in the 2012 MLB First-Year Player draft, the Yankees selected Charles Basford, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound right handed pitcher out of Samford University in Alabama. Initially the 21-year-old senior wanted to go to Mississippi State out of high school but instead he went to Pensacola Junior College and then Samford. Teammates with 33rd round pick Saxon Butler, Basford had a 3.65 ERA with 58 strikeouts and 30 walks in 106 innings over 16 starts this season. It looks like the Yankees are just stockpiling arms at the back of the draft. Gardner, ‘a little stiff,’ does not play

The saga of Brett Gardner’s elbow strain, which has kept him off the field for 46 of the Yankees’ 55 games this season, continues. Gardner was supposed to play for Class A Tampa this afternoon but came up “a little stiff,” according to Joe Girardi, after playing in a game on Tuesday. So his activity was limited to taking batting practice today, after which, the manager said, “he felt very good.” Now, the plan is to fly Gardner to Charleston, where he is expected to play this weekend for the Class A River Dogs.
