Soriano OK with boos, early hook

Rafael Soriano had no qualms with being pulled or hearing boos after blowing his first save of the season against the Mets Sunday. The closer was 9-for-9 entering the game. “That wouldn’t be the first time in my career,” Soriano said of being pulled. “But the team won. … I’ll take it.” Handed a 4-3 lead in the ninth, Soriano gave up a leadoff double to Lucas Duda on a ball that center fielder Curtis Granderson said went further over his head then he expected it to. Pettitte’s Hand Bruised After Barehand Play, X-Rays Negative

Yankee fans can breathe a sigh of relief – X-rays came back negative (bruised left hand) for Yankees southpaw, Andy Pettitte, after he snared a one-hopper back to the mound with his bare hand in the top of the sixth inning on Sunday against the Mets. He remained in the game and retired the next two batters, though he was in noticeable pain. Clay Rapada took over the pitching for the seventh inning with the Bombers trailing, 3-0. The 39-year-old expects to make his next start. With Thursday being a scheduled day off, Pettitte will get a little more rest than usual. Follow me on twitter: @Colin_NYYU Continue reading

The Lost Weekend: Mets Swept By Yankees

It was a very long week of baseball for the New York Mets . Having taken three games from the Cardinals last weekend, the Mets won just one of their next seven games. The last three losses, of course, came at the hands of the hated Yankees . The Mets scored first this afternoon, plating three runs in the second inning with Andy Pettitte on the mound for the Yankees. Scott Hairston doubled, as he often does against left-handed pitchers, and scored one out later on a Vinny Rottino single. Rottino stole second, Omar Quintanilla drew a walk, and Mike Nickeas reached on a ground ball that may have ended the inning with a double play had Robinson Cano not booted it. With the bases loaded, Jordany Valdespin grounded a double past Mark Teixeira to score Rottino and Quintanilla. Andres Torres walked to reload the bases, but Jason Bay and David Wright each struck out swinging to end the inning. Given the dimensions of Yankee Stadium and the Yankees’ powerful lineup, it felt like the three runs the Mets scored in the inning were inadequate. For six-and-two-thirds innings, however, Jon Niese held the Yankees scoreless. He should have had seven scoreless innings, too, but David Wright made a throwing error with two outs and nobody on base in the seventh to extend the inning. Russell Martin followed up with a routine line drive to right field that turned into a home run when Scott Hairston couldn’t quite reach it and it bounced off the top of the fence and into the stands. Niese retired the next batter he faced to finish the seventh, but that was the end of his outing. Because of Wright’s error, both runs he surrendered were unearned, and he had 6 strikeouts and just 1 walk. Niese threw 100 pitches, 62 of which were strikes, and now has a 3.69 ERA on the season. Clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, Bobby Parnell took the mound. For the second time this week, his defense failed him miserably. Derek Jeter led off with a weak, slow ground ball to short, but it went right under Quintanilla’s glove as he charged it and slowly dribbled to the outfield grass. Jordany Valdespin, who looks like one of the worst infield defenders in the history of baseball, was in no rush to back him up, and by the time Kirk Nieuwenhuis got to the ball, Jeter was able to reach second base with ease. Curtis Granderson singled off Parnell, but Jeter was held at third. Mark Teixeira then hit a ground ball up the middle that tied the game, and Alex Rodriguez hit a pop up that fell into no-man’s land in shallow right field to give the Yankees the lead. With that, Terry Collins turned to Tim Byrdak , who notched two outs, and Jon Rauch , who struck out Andruw Jones to end the inning. But the game wasn’t quite over yet. Lucas Duda and Ike Davis — yes, Ike Davis — each doubled to begin the inning, and the game was tied. Davis got thrown out at third base on a weak grounder to short by Quintanilla, but the Mets had runners on the corners with just one out after a Daniel Murphy single on a hit-and-run. Terry Collins pinch hit for Valdespin with Josh Thole , who struck out, and Nieuwenhuis grounded out to second to end the inning. It was the second time this afternoon that the Mets had wasted a great opportunity to score. Rauch remained in the game to start the bottom of the ninth, and very shortly thereafter Russell Martin hit a home run to left field to hand the Mets a walk-off loss. After the game, Rauch told reporters he is not pleased by his performance this year. Martin, Yanks walk-off vs. Mets

Russell Martin led off the ninth with his second homer of the game and the New York Yankees took advantage of some shoddy infield defense to beat the Mets 5-4 Sunday for a three-game sweep. The Mets could not hold an early 3-0 lead, but tied it at 4-4 in the top of the ninth on Ike Davis’ RBI double off reliever Rafael Soriano. In the seventh, Martin hit a two-run homer off the top of the wall in right field after third baseman David Wright’s throwing error extended the inning to pull the Yankees to 3-2. Mark Teixeira tied it at 3-3 with an RBI single in the eighth and Alex Rodriguez gave the Yankees the lead with a bloop single. Martin started the ninth and hit a full-count pitch off Jon Rauch (3-6) to left field. Boone Logan (1-0) got two outs with runners on first and third in relief of Soriano, who blew his first save chance since filling in for the injured Mariano Rivera. Continue reading

Yankees 5, Mets 4

The Mets took a 3-0 lead against Andy Pettitte in the second inning with help from second baseman Robinson Cano’s fielding error and Jonathon Niese pitched repeatedly out of trouble for much of the day to make it stand up for seven innings. But the Yankees rallied with help from errors by Wright and shortstop Omar Quintanilla. The Yankees are 7-2 in June. Derek Jeter led off the eighth with a slow hopper that went under Qunitanilla’s glove and rolled into the outfield. Jeter was given a single and he hustled into second base with a headfirst dive on the error. Curtis Granderson then hit his second opposite field single of the game to left, off Bobby Parnell, to put runners on first and third. Teixeira followed with a tying hit a day after he gave the Yankees the lead with a two-run homer. Rodriguez, who was booed when he hit into a double play to end the sixth, hit a shallow fly for the lead. The Mets scored more than three runs against the Yankees for the first time in 11 games and for the first time in their past five games this season and have lost six of seven overall. On Friday, managers Joe Girardi and Terry Collins each said they’d be taking a rooting interest in the team from the other borough next week. The Yankees next head to Atlanta to face the Mets’ foe in the NL East. The Mets in turn can help the Yankees in the AL East standings with three games against Tampa Bay in Florida. Making his 51st interleague start, matching Livan Hernandez for most all time, Pettitte raced through the top of the Mets order with only seven pitches in the first. He then needed 36 pitches in the second as the Mets scored three runs. Scott Hairston led off with a double and scored on Vinny Rottino’s single to center. After Cano booted Mike Nickeas’ grounder near second base for an error, Jordany Valdepsin had a two-run double. A walk to leadoff batter Andres Torres loaded the bases. Jason Bay, batting second because of his success against Pettitte, struck out as did David Wright to end the threat. Bay is 0 for 11 since returning from a broken rib on Friday night. He hadn’t played since April 23. The Yankees put the leadoff batter on against Niese five times in seven innings but came up empty until the seventh. The Yankees hit into three double plays to help quash threats. Given an extra day of rest after leaving his most recent start with an accelerated heart rate, Niese appeared to get out of seventh inning when Andruw Jones hit a grounder to Wright. Wright spun and made the throw into the dirt. Martin followed with his homer. His homer in the ninth was the third walkoff homer of his career. Pettitte twice caught runners breaking toward second with his deceptive move that has notched 99 career pickoffs. This time Hairston, in the third, and Wright, in the fifth, were thrown out at second for a caught stealing. Pettitte gave the Yankees a scare in the sixth when he snared Hairston’s comebacker with his bare hand and threw him out. Girardi and trainer Steve Donohue raced out to the mound and after several minutes of deliberation and a few practice pitches, Pettitte remained. He retired the side in order then was greeted by a pat on the shoulder by Jeter at the dugout. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Yankees 5, Mets 4

Russell Martin led off the ninth with a walkoff homer and the Yankees beat the Mets, 5-4, to sweep the first installment of the Subway Series. THE HERO: Martin’s blast to left won the game, but he also had a two-run shot in the seventh that galvanized the offense. After the Yankees were held scoreless through their first 20 outs, Martin hit a two-run shot to right to make it 3-2. FIRST BLOWN SAVE: Rafael Soriano blew his first save of the year, with an assist to Curtis Granderson. Continue reading

Yankees 5, Mets 4: Saw That Coming A Mile Away

The Mets had every opportunity to beat the Yankees and avoid a sweep this afternoon, but they failed to hold on a late lead and lost on a walk-off home run by Russell Martin in the ninth inning. The Mets took an early three-run lead in the second inning but failed to add more runs with the bases loaded and just one out in the inning. The Yankees scored twice in the seventh and twice in the eighth to take the lead, but the Mets knotted the game in the ninth. Once again, they squandered an opportunity to score more with runners on the corners and one out, and Martin’s game-ending home run against Jon Rauch happened in the blink of an eye in the bottom of the ninth. We knew it was over when… The Mets failed to take the lead in the ninth inning. Between the team’s defense and bullpen lately, there seemed to be no way the Mets would even get to extra innings. What else? This series was just the second time that the Mets were swept in the Bronx. The other sweep occurred in 2003. If there’s a silver lining here, Jon Niese pitched seven great innings. The only two runs he allowed were unearned. Game Thread Roll Call Nice job by Five-Tool Tool; his effort in the game thread embiggens us all. Why Soler makes some sense

Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler is expected to decide which team he will sign with soon, perhaps as early as Monday. Buster Olney listed the Yankees, Cubs, Braves and Dodgers as strong possibilities. Soler is the 20-year-old, 6-foot-3, 225-pound prospect that is said to have five tools. The rumors have been humming about the Cubs and Yankees being the favorites. But it makes some sense for the Yankees to be heavily involved because: The international market is about to change on July 2, which will severely limit how much damage the Yankees can do internationally.
