Pettitte, Kuroda: Bruised but unbowed

Andy Pettitte displayed a purple bruise on his left palm — between the index and middle fingers, where it was struck by a Mets comebacker on Sunday — in the Turner Field clubhouse before tonight’s game with the Braves. But Pettitte said the injury would not keep him from making his next scheduled start, Friday against the Nationals in D.C. Hiroki Kuroda did not display his left foot, hit by a line drive Friday night, but said he too expected to pitch as scheduled in Wednesday’s finale here against the Braves. Continue reading

All clear in Atlanta

Turns out Waldstein of The Times was right. So far, anyway. The skies over Turner Field have cleared — although there are still a lot of dark clouds in the distance — and the tarp has been off for a couple of hours, allowing both teams to take BP on the field, so we anticipate an on-time start (7:10 p.m.) for tonight’s Yankees-Braves game. Will update if any change. Continue reading

Girardi: No word yet on Gardner

Joe Girardi said he had nothing to report on the condition of Brett Gardner, who saw Dr. James Andrews today to get another opinion on his strained right elbow, which has kept him out of all but nine games this season. Gardner, who had a setback in his rehab over the weekend, will also get a third opinion from Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the Reds team physician, in Cincinnati on Thursday. Girardi said it was unlikely the team will release any information on Gardner’s prognosis until after the second exam. Continue reading

No Small Ball in New York

The Yankees are all smiles when they’re crossing the plate after a home run. But the smiles seem to stop without them, as they can’t seem to win unless they homer. This past weekends Subway Series was highlighted by spectacular heroics and even larger swings at the plate. Game one on friday was an all-out attack on Mets ace, Johan Santana, who pitched the teams first no-hitter in history just a week prior. The Bombers jumped on him though in this start. Robinson Cano hit two, two-run blasts over the wall, the second of which was followed by one from Nick Swisher and then Andruw Jones, for back-to back-to back bombs in the Yankees 9-1 win. On Saturday, they started out playing slightly smaller ball in the Bronx. After scoring an early run off an A-Rod single in the first, the Yanks were stagnant for a few innings. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer which wound up giving them the edge in the 4-1 victory. Once again yesterday afternoon, the big fly was… Continue reading

5 Pitchers the Yankees can target at the trade deadline

It’s pretty much predestination that the Yankees are buyers at each and every trade deadline, due to a mix of their high payroll, scrutinizing press, and general success in the AL East. Generally, the real question is: “What are they trying to buy?” It’s pretty crystal clear this year that a starting pitcher is their target, so I decided to look at the free agent class of 2013 to see whom the Yankees could pry at the deadline for financial relief and/or young talent. Matt Garza, Cubs: There were talks after Garza’s 2011 breakout that the Cubs would extend the fire baller and make him a cornerstone of their rebuilding project. A little regression and talks of a fire sale in Chicago point to a different conclusion by Epstein and the suits running the Cubs: it’s smarter to play the market and stockpile young talent than it is to build around a near-30 year-old pitcher. Still, though, Garza has plenty of talent and grit. Despite his home run regressing to the mean and more … Continue reading

Update On Pettitte’s Hand

From Chad Jennings:Andy Pettitte had his left hand wrapped after today’s game, but he said he felt fortunate. He was fortunate to get out of the sixth inning, and fortunate to leave with no real concern about making his next start. “It’s swollen, and as soon as the swelling gets out, it’ll be fine,” Pettitte said. “It swelled up, got me up high on the hand, toward my fingers. It was hard to throw. I couldn’t really feel the ball. It swelled up immediately and I just had a hard time feeling the ball in my hand. … I probably should have came out.” … Pettitte had X-rays which showed no broken bones, but his hand was swollen throughout those final two outs.Looks like the Yankees dodged another bullet. Braves Vs. Yankees Not Creating The Same Buzz

There was a time when you heard the Atlanta Braves and New York Yankees were playing and you knew it was time to make baseball a priority in the summer sports shuffle for that period of time. Not so much anymore, though. Talking Chop reported that the opening series of the season against the Milwaukee Brewers averaged $1 per ticket more than ones against the Yankees. That’s unheard of for having the Bombers in town. But to think of it, there was the piece from SB Nation New York that pointed out how the Mets have become more interesting than the Yankees this season, that’s even though the Yanks are still banging out home runs like its nobody’s business. This line from TC was really telling: The real surprise is that Braves fans are already scooping up tickets for the season’s final home series, against the Mets in late September. Read more about the Atlanta Braves at Talking Chop and head over to Baseball Nation for more news, notes and analysis around Major League Baseball. Continue reading
