Girardi: No ligament damage for Gardner

ATLANTA — According to Joe Girardi, we know what Brett Gardner does not have, which is ligament damage in his right elbow, the type that requires Tommy John surgery. And that is good news. But we still don’t know what Gardner does have, which made his surprise appearance in the Yankees clubhouse this afternoon puzzling and a little bit ominous. Gardner was examined Monday by Dr. James Andrews, the elbow specialist, and will travel to Cincinnati on Wednesday to be examined by Dr. Continue reading

Pregame notes: Kuroda, Soriano, ‘pen

• Hiroki Kuroda, who got hit with a line drive off the left foot in Friday night’s game against the Mets, ran some sprints in the Turner Field outfield this afternoon and threw “a light bullpen session” in preparation for his start in Wednesday’s series finale against the Braves. “I felt fine on both of them,” Kuroda said. “So I think I’m ready to go.” • It’s unclear whether Rafael Soriano, who suffered a blister on his index finger while pitching against the Mets on Sunday afternoon, would be available tonight. New York Yankees: Gardner solutions

Ode to Brett Gardner. After a perennial sluggish start, the New York Yankees have smoothed out the kinks and are playing solid baseball again. This doesn’t mean the Yankees problems are solved but it does show fans that the Bombers can still compete at the top, which was once again somewhat in question not so long ago. At this point in the season, no team is home free. The likelihood of more slumps and injuries are as unavoidable as they are unpredictable but there are always concerns that teams can prepare for beforehand. For the Yankees that concern is replacing the still injured Brett Gardner. Gardner brings a dynamic to the Yankees that cannot be replaced with anyone on the 25-man current roster. No one can steal bags like Gardner, but my concern is the lack of defense that is now in left field everyday. THE CURRENT SITUATION: Heading into the dog days of summer platooning Raul Ibanez, Dewayne Wise and Andruw Jones in left field just aren’t realistic long-term options. Ibanez an… Continue reading

Gardner guarded on injury

ATLANTA, AL — Brett Gardner was in the clubhouse today. He said he was examined yesterday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham but, perhaps ominously, would not reveal what the doctor told him. “I’m going to wait until after I see the doctor on Thursday before I say anything,” said Gardner, who will see Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the Reds team physician, in Cincinnati on Thursday. Gardner has been on the disabled list since April 19 with a strained right elbow. Continue reading

A look back at the free agents the Yankees missed out on

The 2012 free agent pool was fairly decent last offseason and, as usual, there was tons of speculation on who the Yankees would go after.  Regardless, they were pretty economical in gaining assets through savvy trading (Michael Pineda), picking up cast offs (Raul Ibanez), and re-signing critical assets (CC Sabathia, Andrew Jones, Eric Chavez). It’s difficult to truly gage how a player WOULD HAVE played had they signed with a particular team; there are too many variables to take into consideration.  However its still worth looking at how some of the potential Yankee targets are performing thus far and if the Yankees would have been better off had they signed them. C.J. Wilson was probably the most likely FA to land in Pinstripes but opted to don a halo with the LA Angels.  The Yanks needed another starter to compliment CC but couldn’t pull the trigger with CJ.  They ended up with former Dodger Hiroki Kurdoa and benefited from Andy Petttitte’s decision to return.  Wilson is currently… Continue reading

Russell Branyan destroys AAA pitchers

The Yankees signed Russell Branyan to a minor league contract this offseason which gave him a chance to fight his way onto the Yankees roster as the DH. Unfortuntely for him a bad back ruined his spring training and kept him on the shelf for almost three full months. Like a true veteran looking to hang-on though, he stuck around, rehabbed his back, and now he’s healthy and playing everyday down in the minors. He’s absolutely crushing the ball down there too. In 13 games so far he is hitting .318/.483/.795 with six homers and three doubles. It’s gotten to the point where if the Yankees don’t call him up soon, he will likely ask for his release and hook on with another team soon. But where could they use him? Branyan has never been an amazing player, especially not in recent years, but one thing he can do is beat up on right handed pitching. In his career he has a .239/.338/.495 line against righties which is immensely better than his .206/.287/.441 line aga… Continue reading

Lawyer says jury should be ‘rewarding’ Clemens during closing arguments

WASHINGTON — Rusty Hardin, Roger Clemens’ lead attorney, told the jury, “You should be rewarding Roger Clemens, not prosecuting him” as the defense wrapped up its closing argument in this federal case. The government, meanwhile, politely casted aspersions on one of its own key witnesses — Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte… Continue reading

Betances having a disastrous season in AAA

Last season Baseball America ranked Dellin Betances as the No. 43 prospect in all of baseball and after a brief September call-up it appeared he would be in the Bronx in a short time. However, he has taken a big step back in his development this year and it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll see him in Pinstripes anytime soon. The 24-year-old Betances is huge. He’s 6-foot-8 and 255-pounds. It is a big part of why he is such a tantalizing prospect, but it is also why he has such a hard time getting his mechanics in order. So far this season he has pitched 62.1 innings with a 8.2 K/9. Not bad except that it is his lowest K/9 that he’s put up at any level over any period of time. To make matters worse, his BB/9 of 8.1 is almost unheard of among elite prospects and is nearly double his career mark of 4.8. The problem is in his mechanics. Here is what Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus recently wrote about Betances: He’s never exactly been mechanically… Continue reading

Rivera finally having his surgery

After his knee surgery on Tuesday, Mariano Rivera will be little closer to returning to a major league field. Rivera won’t be back on the mound until next year. A little less than a week ago, Rivera spoke about his feelings going into the operation: The surgery will be performed by Dr. David Altchek, the New York Mets’ team physician, and Rivera expects to be ready to pitch again by the start of next season. “Oh yeah, there’s no doubt about that, God willing,” Rivera said Wednesday afternoon before the Yankees’ game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
