Torre would have no problem with A-Rod on WBC roster

It was recently announced that former Yankees manager Joe Torre was picked to manage Team USA in the next World Baseball Classic. This opened up the possibility that he could one day manage a few of his former players including Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter. The thing is things between A-Rod and Torre were never great. It was a cold relationship while the two were together including the time Torre infamously dropped A-Rod in the lineup in the 200s playoffs against the Tigers when he was struggling. After Torre left the Bronx he made A-Rod look bad in his book on the way out. It doesn’t seem like things have gotten much better as he bashed A-Rod to Yahoo Sports about a month ago. “He was concerned with putting numbers up, and that really wasn’t what we were all about,” Torre said during the Yahoo Sports interview. “We were about winning games; that was the only statistic that was important for us. Alex, in his defense, he just felt if he put certain … Continue reading

Is A-Rod a table-setter?

I looked at this question and more in my projections. Here is a sample: Alex Rodriguez, 3B Current: . 276, 10 HRs, 30 RBIs Projected: .276, 26 HRs, 78 RBIs A-Rod is on pace to have his lowest full-season homer and RBI output since he had 23 and 84 in 1997 as a 21-year-old in Seattle. The next season, A-Rod exploded into the .310, 42-homer, 124-RBI monster that he has been for most of his career. A-Rod hit the grand slam to tie Lou Gehrig’s all-time record the other night, but there has been no power surge. Continue reading

Rumor: Yankees not interested in OFer Carlos Quentin

If the Yankees look for an outfielder on the trade market to replace Brett Gardner it doesn’t sound like it will be Carlos Quentin. According to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports, the Yankees don’t think Quentin is a good fit and will look for someone faster, more like Gardner, to replace Gardner. Quentin, 29, is a free agent at the end of this year and is currently hitting .421/.542/.921/1.463 in 12 games since coming off the DL. His career line is .255/.349/.498/.847. In his younger days with the Diamondbacks he was solid defensively, but lately injuries have slowed him and he’s been more of a liability out there. The Yankees took a big hit defensively when Gardner went down and it’s easy to see how important outfield defense can be when watching Raul Ibanez butcher everything out there. So it’s easy to see why the Yankees would want somebody who could improve their running game and outfield defense like Gardner did. The Yankees might also want to think ab… Continue reading

Yankees demote Phelps to Single-A to activate D-Rob

David Robertson is finally coming back today, but it is at the expense of David Phelps who will be sent to Single-A to be stretched out before returning to the Triple-A rotation, the Yankees announced today. I’m not a fan of this move. Freddy Garcia has been downright awful for the Yankees this year and should be the one to go. The Yankees are a better team with Phelps on the roster than Garcia, but the reason they are doing it is because this gives them an extra option. The Yankees have demoted Phelps, he can’t help the big league team now, but he could later in the event of an injury. If Garcia was cut instead, the minor leagues are not an option and he would be released and the Yankees would be on the hook for the remainder of his $4 million contract. There is one benefit from this though besides just having more options in the event of injuries and that is having Phelps return to the rotation. It’s the minor league rotation, but he’s still getting stre… Continue reading

Gardner out another 1-2 months

Brett Gardner got a second opinion on his injured elbow today and the doctor agreed with the previous diagnosis – elbow muscle strain, bone bruise and joint inflammation that have not fully healed, the Yankees said in a statement. The Yankees also said that Gardner was given platelet-rich plasma and a cortisone shot and will rest the elbow a full 3-4 weeks with an elbow brace before beginning rehab. Gardner has already had two setbacks and been out two full months so the Yankees will no doubt be very slow as he tries to rehab his elbow a third time. Six weeks seems on the optimistic end if he’s out a month before resuming baseball activities. It might be safer to assume that he’ll be out eight weeks though given that this injury has already lingered well past what they initially expected. The Yankees have had Raul Ibanez as Gardner’s primary replacement for most of the last two months with Andruw Jones, Dewayne Wise, and Jayson Nix helping to carry the loa… Continue reading

Gardner Could be Back in 3-4 Weeks

From Marc Carig:Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner could be back in three to four weeks, the club announced today, after doctors ruled out the possibility of a major injury that could have cost him his season. Instead, two leading orthopedic surgeons confirmed that Gardner has a strained left elbow, a bone bruise, and joint inflammation, which have not fully healed. Gardner underwent platelet rich plasma therapy and took a cortisone shot today. Doctors have recommended three to four weeks rest for the outfielder, who has suffered two setbacks in his attempt to return from the injury, which landed him on the disabled list in mid-April.The Yankees did more than enough to weather the injury storm that hit them earlier this year. Between the losses of Gardner, Mo and Robertson I thought the Yankees would be in trouble and I’m sure most of you felt the same way. Instead, the Yanks have won 16 of their last 20 and hold the AL’s best record. Now, with Robertson back and Gardner… Continue reading

Phelps to Single-A

With David Robertson coming off the DL on Friday, the Yankees have optioned David Phelps to Single-A Tampa. The reason they have done this is so he can build up his arm strength at a lower level before going to Triple-A to start. In theory, once he builds up his arm strength, he will be the starter-in-waiting once the Yankees have an injury to their rotation. Freddy Garcia, the de facto long man, probably is teetering on the territory where he won’t be a viable option if a starter is needed. Continue reading

Torre OK with A-Rod reunion at WBC

It goes without saying that Joe Torre would like to have one more chance to manage Derek Jeter in next year’s World Baseball Classic, but the former Yankees skipper said Thursday that he wouldn’t have a problem reuniting with Alex Rodriguez, either. Continue reading

Rumor: Yankees watching Ben Sheets’ latest comeback attempt

For about a five year period, Ben Sheets was one of the best pitchers in the game of baseball. Unfortunately because of injuries his last real good season was in 2008. Now Sheets is attempting another comeback. Sheets, who hasn’t pitched at all in the big leagues since 2010, threw for scouts on Wednesday in Louisiana and among them were representatives from the Yankees, according to Tim Dierkes of MLBTradeRumors.com. Sheets is recovering from Tommy John Surgery he had back in 2010 as well as two other procedures done in the same elbow. He apparently is feeling well now and wants to pitch for a contender down the stretch. It’s hard to see the Yankees being interested in Sheets at this point despite going to see him pitch. He is unproven being out of baseball for so long and the starting rotation has been solid as of late. They are probably just keeping tabs on him just in case an injury occurs or potentially for this offseason as well. Sheets is now 33-years-old and h… Continue reading
