40 candles for Andy
WASHINGTON — Today is Andy Pettitte’s 40th birthday and he got the expected question — “How does it feel?” — from a most-unexpected source: Teammate Raul Ibañez, who celebrated the big 4-0 on June 2. “Raul told me he had a little anxiety about it for a couple of days,” Pettitte said. “I really didn’t. No different, you know? I feel like I did yesterday, so I guess that’s a good thing.” Andy Pettitte #46 SPNew York Yankees 2012 STATS GM6 W3 L2 BB9 K40 ERA2. Continue reading

Mets first-rounder’s role model: Derek Jeter
Mets first-round picks Gavin Cecchini and Kevin Plawecki were introduced at Citi Field on Friday. The two took batting practice, met David Wright and then held a news conference. Cecchini, a shortstop, noticeably wore No. 2. Why? “Derek Jeter is my favorite player,” said Cecchini, 18, who looked as skinny and young as Jeter did when he came out of Michigan 20 years ago. “The reason he is my favorite player is because he plays the game hard always. Pregame notes: D-Rob, Gino, Swisher
WASHINGTON — David Robertson is officially back in uniform and ready to go tonight, and Joe Girardi said there would be no restrictions on his use as the set-up man for closer Rafael Soriano. But Girardi did indicate there might be some flexibility to the way he uses Robertson now that he’s off the DL. “It’ll be Robby and Sori in the eighth and ninth, and I’ll use (Boone Logan) in the seventh,” Girardi said. “(But) there could come a situation too, if you’ve got left-right-left in the eighth and you’ve got three right-handers in the seventh, maybe you flip Robertson and Boonie around a little bit. GAMETRACKER: Yankees at Nationals
The Yankees are down in Washington, D.C., for a battle of first-place teams with the Nationals. Joe Girardi will send Phil Hughes to the hill against 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper and Washington. The Nats start surging left-hander Gio Gonzalez… Continue reading

Robby’s day off
WASHINGTON — Robinson Cano had played in every Yankees game so far this season, 60 at second base and two as the DH, so it came as a bit of a surprise when he wasn’t in tonight’s starting lineup, especially since he had been out on the field taking early batting practice at 2:30 p.m. Cano had been spiked slightly in this left shin in Wednesday night’s game in Atlanta, so it was suspected that might have been a factor. Robinson Cano #24 2BNew York Yankees 2012 STATS GM62 HR11 RBI30 R41 OBP. Continue reading

MT25: "Engage Exercise"- A Video Review
So Yankees.com likes to do “Yankees On Demand” videos from time to time. They’re usually just typical interviews with players about parts of their lives, but I found one today that I just had to review. “In the Gym with Teixeira” ( link ) I can only assume that it’s Evil Tex working out because Good Tex is too busy picking lilacs and treating his dainty cough. TIME TO PUMP SOME IRON, BITCHES. 0:10- I see we’re in brief exercise montage. That’s probably not even Evil Tex working out. The smart money says it’s the batboy. Or Brian Cashman, because as the “Moneyball” movie taught me, all General Managers work out like nobody’s busines. Right? 0:27- DONE WITH THIS STUPID JUMP ROPE. That was just cast aside like it was some undeserving rag. No love. 0:35- Oh hey, I just learned who the Yankees’ strength and conditioning Coach is! Good for you, Dana Cavalea. 0:36- Why’s Cavalea looking off to his left? Does he need a cue card to remember who Mark Teixeira is? Evil Tex won’t appreciate that. 0:39- Well, he clearly wasn’t looking at Tex since Tex appears on his right. Maybe he was quizzically glancing at Good Tex writing “Thank You” cards to everyone on the team for the Yankees’ efforts on the recent road trip. 0:43- Here we get this post’s lead picture. Evil Tex is here to make his body his bitch. Note that he flexes when Cavalea says “lower body.” Oh. 0:45- Cavalea: “Ready, Tex?” Evil MT25: “‘SDOIT” 0:49- One-armed step-up time. Whatever that means. 1:00- Cavalea: Explode up. /Time for Evil Tex to mime some groin kneeing/ 1:10- /MT25 Exhaust switch on/ 1:25- “Tex Tip #1: Track your workouts. And the locations of any writers who dare write negatively of your ability. They will pay.” 1:30- This is actually Evil Tex’s hit list. Best hope you’re not on it. 1:41- Now it’s “Cable One Arm Lat Row.” Hardcore? 1:46- Cavalea: “You can pull it as hard as you want and there won’t be any kink in the cable.” Pause. 1:51- Work the tail, Tex. 2:06- Obligatory chest shot. Thanks for that. 2:17- Okay, I’m sure the judo chop forward does something, but it just looks so silly. Especially when the MT25 does it. 2:45- “Tex Tip #2: Breathe properly and consistently during workout. And at-bats. And at first base. And doing pretty much everything, from cheating lie detector tests to eating muenster.” 2:55- “Tex Tip #3: Stay hydrated with your juice. Your juice is your friend. Love your juice. Juice for life.” 3:05- Reach to the sky with your Gold Glove hand. Disregard the haters. If the fools prefer Adrian Gonzalez , throw rocks at them. 3:27- DINGERS. The end result. 3:33- Squat. 3:47- Opposite field power? HAHA. Apparently that doesn’t get used much. 3:55- Wait a minute, how did Tex get to third?? A quick Baseball-Reference check says that Tex has hit four triples as a Yankee, none of which were in Oakland. Guess errors were involved. Or Evil Tex is playing with our minds. 4:02- “Tex Tip #4: Cardio does not just mean running and cycling. It also means chasing down your enemies with a chainsaw. Gets the heart pumping.” 4:27- “Tex has dynamite form.” That’s one word for it, I guess. 4:47- Lifting big weights so he’ll have the strength to carry the team I suppose. Has that ever happened? I’m not sure. 5:00- “Tex is very aware of his body.” He’s Texy and he knows it? 5:25- “Tex Tip #5: Never push yourself too hard in the weight room. Push other people so hard that they cry for their mommy and beg for mercy. Don’t grant it.” 5:30- “Hey listen, this is sore. Let’s do some exercises to help out that muscle or that body part.” So what does Jeter do when he… never mind. 5:45- “Tex Top #6: Do not waste too much time in between sets. Otherwise time will waste you. Unless you’re me.” 5:52- You have to love this music. It’s like the worst trance club music you’ve ever heard. 6:23- Hammer. 6:35- “Tex Tip #7: Take care of your body. Workout, get sleep, hydrate, drink a fifth of Maker’s Mark in a day, and be nutritious.” 6:49- “This offseason I started a drinking a lot of raw juice.” We know, Tex. You love your juice. 6:57- “This is the flat bench press, otherwise known as the ‘beach muscle press.’” /odd grin/ “Uh, no…” That was a weird moment. Guess that’s how he met Mrs. MT25. At least how Good Tex met her anyway, I do not want to know how Evil Tex did. 7:06- “Tex Tip #8: Keep chest and back muscles balanced. If your chest gets too big and strong, your back’s going to round and you’re going to get too tight in [the shoulder]. Not good for throwing or swinging, like that Giambi fatto.” 7:54- “Tex Tip #9: Train hard in the offseason because you will need to rest your body during the season. The New York City clubs don’t get torn apart themselves, you know, you need energy for that.” 8:45- Tex, you’re boring me. You have some nice RPG Boss Battle music, but what are you fighting? 9:15- Man, what happened to the coach? I forgot his name already, and hes gone now. 9:45- Oh, he’s back now. Just in time for the cool giant, green rubber band. 10:17- The tubing shuffle. I prefer the Super Bowl Shuffle. Tex ain’t here to start no trouble, he’s just here to do his tubing shuffle? 10:35- Reggie? Is that you in the background? Can you liven this up at all, please? No? Carry on, MT25… 10:55- “And there it is, workout over. Only 10 minutes every day. I spend more time vomiting into random portalets on Long Island.” Continue reading

Baltimore Orioles at Atlanta Braves Series Preview
The 2012 season hasn’t been short on storyline’s since things began in May, but there has been one storyline that’s been bigger than the others. That, of course, has been the Baltimore Orioles and their hot start. As it stands today, they sit 37-26 on the season, and are in the second place in the American League East. They’re .5 games back behind the Yankees . Baltimore comes in hot, winners of five straight games. The Orioles had a busy offseason, signed Tsuyoshi Wada and We-Yin Chen from the international market, while also adding Wilson Betemit , Luis Ayala , in free agency and claiming Darren O’Day on waivers. Baltimore also was active in the trade market, shipping Jeremy Guthrie to Colorado for Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom . Baltimore also made a splash during the season, signing center fielder Adam Jones to a six year, $85 million deal. Offense: Things start with Jones, who is having a career year in 2012. Jones is hitting .306/.353/.580 with a .398 wOBA and 152 wRC+. His power is off the charts so far, as he sports an ISO of .275. His highest ISO in a season before that was .180. Jones leads the team in homers with 18, and has stolen nine bases. Speaking of career years, Chris Davis also falls into that category. He’s hitting .308/.350/.542 on the season with a .373 wOBA and 135 wRC+. Davis also has 12 home runs. Matt Wieters is also putting together a pretty good year himself, as he’s sporting a line of .258/.338/.451 with a .342 wOBA and 113 wRC+. He has nine homers on the year. J.J. Hardy comes in at .261/.301/.451 and has been good with the glove as he has a defensive runs saved number of +11. He’s also shown some pop, corking 11 home runs on the year. Robert Andino isn’t much to write home about with the bat, hitting only .239/.293/.324, while Wilson Betemit has been a little better at ..231/.300/.408 with eight home runs. Mark Reynolds sits at .245/.369/.439 on the year, which is better overall than he has been but has come at the sacrifice of power. With Nick Markakis hurt, Steve Pearce is in right field for the Orioles. Pitching matchups after the jump. Friday June 15th, 7:35 PM ET Brian Matusz #17 / Pitcher / Baltimore Orioles Height: 6-4 Weight: 190 Bats: L Throws: L Born: Feb 11, 1987 Tommy Hanson #48 / Pitcher / Atlanta Braves Height: 6-6 Weight: 220 Bats: R Throws: R Born: Aug 28, 1986 Matusz enters at 5-6 with a 4.82 ERA, 4.50 FIP, and 4.81 xFIP. His K/9 rate is the exact same as last year, sitting at 6.89, but he’s seen a slight decrease in walks per nine from 4.35 to 4.13. The control isn’t great, so patience will do Atlanta well. In terms of his arsenal, Matusz has five pitches: a four-seam, sinker, curve, slider, and change. Both the four-seam and sinker average just under 92 miles per hour. His slider sports a lot of late movement, while his curve is a sweeping one. The slider is his best swing and miss pitch by far, sporting a 17.55 whiff percentage. He’s got a huge platoon split, as right-hander hitters are crushing him at a .312/.393/.495 clip. Lefties are hitting only .136/.188/.215 against him. Saturday June 16th, 7:15 PM ET Jason Hammel #39 / Pitcher / Baltimore Orioles Height: 6-6 Weight: 215 Bats: R Throws: R Born: Sep 02, 1982 Brandon Beachy #37 / Pitcher / Atlanta Braves Height: 6-3 Weight: 215 Bats: R Throws: R Born: Sep 03, 1986 Maybe all Hammel needed was to get out of Coors Field. After a couple of middling years in Colorado, Hammel has been a completely different pitcher in Baltimore. He’s 6-2 with a 3.22 ERA, 3.57 FIP, and 3.59 xFIP. His biggest jump has come via his strikeout rate, which sits at 8.55 per nine this year, by far his career high. His walk rate is down a little, from 3.59 last year to 3.34 this season. Another big jump has been his groundball rate, which is up to 53.2 % from 44 % last season. Part of the reason for that could be the newest addition to his arsenal, a two-seam fastball. It doesn’t have much sink to it, but he’s gotten a lot of ground balls from it. Hammel also throws four-seam, slider, curve, and change. His velocity is up this year, with his four-seam averaging just over 94 miles per hour. Like Matusz, his slider is his best swing and miss pitch, with 18.47% whiff rate. He’s primarily four-seam, two-seam, slider. Sunday June 17th, 1:35 PM ET Wei-Yin Chen #16 / Pitcher / Baltimore Orioles Height: 6-0 Weight: 195 Bats: L Throws: L Born: Jul 25, 1985 Randall Delgado #40 / Pitcher / Atlanta Braves Height: 6-3 Weight: 200 Bats: R Throws: R Born: Feb 09, 1990 No pictures for this one, guys. Chen signed with Baltimore in the offseason, and has been pretty effective for the O’s. The rookie is 6-2 with a 3.68 ERA, 4.01 FIP, and 4.40 xFIP. He strikes out just under seven batters per nine, while walking just under three per nine. He also has five pitches: a four-seam, two-seam, slider, curve, and change. He averages 91 on the four and two seams, throwing the four-seam over 50 percent of the time. He throws both his slider and change about the same number of times, and both are able to miss bats. The slider averages 82 miles per hour. Every now and then he’ll mix in a really slow 72 mile per hour curve, kind of like Yu Darvish does as well. ***All pitch data from Brooksbaseball.net *** Bullpen: Jim Johnson -RH (CL) Pedro Strop -RH Kevin Gregg -RH Darren O’Day -RH Troy Patton -LH Luis Ayala -RH Dana Eveland -LH Continue reading
