Notes: Walking wounded progressing
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There’s a game this afternoon (4:10 p.m.) between the Yankees and Rays, but most of the pregame news was made across the bay at the Yankees developmental complex in Tampa. — Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis played in an extended-spring game this morning, and both came out OK, according to Joe Girardi. Teixeira played five innings at first base and led off each inning, going 1-for-4 with a double and a sacrifice fly in his five plate appearances. Continue reading

Postgame notes: The Forgotten Man
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With the Yankees, and Curtis Granderson, suffering yet another crippling injury, the game itself — a 9-4 Yankees win, only their fourth in the last 17 games they’ve played at the Trop — almost seemed secondary. But there were non-injury-related stories, to wit: Ben Francisco#45 RFNew York Yankees2013 STATS GM21 HR1 RBI1 R4 OBP.220 AVG.114• Robinson Cano was credited with a hit-by-pitch, and an RBI, when HP umpire John Hirschbeck ruled Cano was hit by Cesar Ramos’ fifth-inning pitch. Rapid Reaction: Yankees 9, Rays 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — And the hits just keep on coming, 11 in the game by the Yankees and one more to the gut of the team when Curtis Granderson, who missed the first 38 games of the season with a broken right forearm after being hit by a pitch, got plunked again in the fifth inning and suffered a broken left pinkie, casting a deep pall over what should have been a joyous 9-4 victory. And just moments after that announcement, the Yankees suffered another scare when David Phelps caught a line drive off the bat of Ben Zobrist on what appeared to be his right forearm, and was removed from the game. First Pitch: First ‘big’ series of 2013
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There is no longer any argument that the Yankees, at 28-18 and atop the AL East by a game despite having nearly a dozen players on the disabled list, have overperformed. And one could certainly make the argument that the Tampa Bay Rays, who a year ago had the same 28-18 record and led the division by a game, have underperformed, thanks in large part to their 5-10 start. But one thing no one can dispute is that despite how well the Yankees have played through their adversity, once again no one is running away with the AL East, which remains as tight as Tom Jones’ pants. The Yankees and the Ewing Theory
Are the 2013 Yankees an example of the Ewing Theory, made famous by Bill Simmons? The theory, devised by Simmons’ friend Dave Cirilli, has two elements: 1. A star athlete receives an inordinate amount of media attention and fan interest, yet his teams never win anything substantial with him (other than maybe some early-round playoff series). 2. That same athlete leaves his team — either by injury, trade, graduation, free agency or retirement — and both the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season. Injury roundup: Nova first, Youk, Joba later
The Yankees have so many players injured, resting, rehabbing and healing that it’s difficult even for their GM to keep track of it all. In case you’ve forgotten, the Yankees have six players on the 60-day disabled list (Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Teixeira, Francisco Cervelli, Michael Pineda and Cesar Cabral), five on the 15-day DL (Andy Pettitte, Ivan Nova, Eduardo Nunez, Kevin Youkilis and Joba Chamberlain) and two, Chris Stewart and Hiroki Kuroda, who are banged-up and listed as day-to-day. Montero sent down by M’s
The Michael Pineda trade is improving. Slightly. Jesus Montero, who is batting .208, has struggled to the point he is being sent down by the Seattle Mariners. From the Herald Tribune: Catcher Jesus Montero will be sent to Triple-A Tacoma, while catcher Jesus Sucre will be selected from the Rainiers. Double-A back-up catcher Brandon Bantz, who was serving as the starter in Jackson after John Hicks suffered a groin injury and went on the DL, is already headed to Tacoma to serve as Mike Zunino’s backup. First Pitch: The Professional
Like so many other young players, David Adams tried to be a student during spring training. When No. 2 walked into the clubhouse or onto the field, Adams paid attention to how the Captain went about his work. He would pick up little elements of knowledge, looking at Jeter in person or seeing a TV interview with the Yankee legend. Adams noticed Jeter’s skill for just doing the right thing. “Anytime he is asked a question he has the right response,” Adams said. Continue reading
