Burnett: New delivery changed velocity
Ex-Yankees pitcher A.J. Burnett says he enjoyed his time in New York, but wished he could’ve had an opportunity this season to prove people wrong. “I have a championship there,” Burnett, who was traded the Pirates on Saturday in exchange for a pair of prospects — Pittsburgh will only have to pay $13 million of the $31 million left on his contract, sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney — said during a Tuesday appearance on ESPN NewYork 1050’s “The Michael Kay Show. Hangin’ with Phil Hughes
In a new feature of the blog, we have started Hangin’, where we go off the field with the Yankees. First up, Phil Hughes. Q: When Phil Hughes is away from the ballpark, who do you hang out with? A: Usually on the road, I’ll hang out with Gardy (Brett Gardner) a lot. If his wife doesn’t come on the trip we’ll hang out and play video games in the hotel. People think we live a pretty glamorous life but it is similar to hanging out with your buddies back home. Continue reading

Write it in ink: Yankees lineups set
Now that the Yankees have finalized their deal with Raul Ibanez, we can predict with full confidence the Yankees lineup on a daily basis no matter who is pitching. On days a right-hander is starting, Ibanez will start and, I’m guessing, bat seventh. On a day a lefty is starting, the same spot will be filled by Andruw Jones. I will trust you to fill in the rest of the batting order. That’s because Joe Girardi essentially said either Ibanez or Jones will be in the lineup every day, mostly as a DH platoon, but also occasionally in the outfield. Continue reading
The Translator: Joe Girardi on Mo Rivera
The Translator is a recurring feature of the blog where we will present what someone said and what (we think) they mean by running his words through our high-tech Truth Detector. THE QUESTION: “What is your reaction to what Mariano Rivera said on Monday?” THE ANSWER: “Yeah, I saw it. I’m not sure how it came out. That’s his prerogative. By not sharing it with anyone, that gives him the option to change his mind … You know that obviously one day it’s going to come to an end. Continue reading
Olney: Pineda is a huge addition (literally)
TAMPA, Fla. — CC Sabathia, a redwood of a pitcher at 6-foot-7, has a pants inseam of 36 inches. Ivan Nova, who is about 6-5, has an inseam of 40 inches. “But I have it that long because I wear my pants long,” Nova explained, saying his legs really aren’t as long as that inseam measurement suggests. Michael Pineda is bigger than Sabathia, bigger than Nova. Phil Hughes is 6-5, and as he worked in the same group as Pineda, Sabathia and Nova at New York Yankees camp here Monday, he might as well have been Eddie Gaedel. Continue reading

Ibanez, a New York native, comes home
From the Yankees: YANKEES SIGN OUTFIELDER RAUL IBANEZ The New York Yankees today announced they have signed outfielder Raul Ibanez to a one-year Major League contract. Ibanez, 39, batted .245 (131-for-535) with 65 runs, 31 doubles, 20 home runs and 84 RBI in 144 games as the Philadelphia Phillies’ primary leftfielder in 2011 (131 starts in left field). During the 2011 season, he reached career milestones in doubles (350th on May 3 vs. Washington), RBI (1,000th on June 5 at Pittsburgh), runs scored (900thon July 8 vs. Continue reading

Jones caught in a numbers game
Poor Andruw Jones. Last season, he arrived in Yankees camp to learn that No. 25, the number he had worn throughout his major-league career, was already the property of Mark Teixeira. So he went for No. 18. This season, he ran into Hiroki Kuroda, who wanted No. 18 because it has some sort of significance for Japanese-born pitchers. (Daisuke Matsuzaka wears it. So did Hideki Irabu and a bunch of others). So now, he’s wearing 22, previously worn by Roger Clemens, and most recently, by Colin Curtis and Chad Huffman in 2010. Continue reading
