New York Yankees Made Good Call By Not Extending Russell Martin

Even though New York Yankess fans are divided on how much value Russell Martin provided to the squad, many statistics – particularly defensive metrics – will reveal that he was a strong performer in 2011.  The main purpose of this post isn’t to discuss Russell Martin’s defense in detail so I’m not going to burden you with complicated algorithms to determine how many runs he saved the New York Yankees with his framing ability.  There is also the fact that I don’t quite remember where they are.  Anyway, the main point that I want to make here is that the New York Yankees are better off having NOT signed Russell Martin to a long-term extension this offseason. Prior to Martin and the Yankees coming to an agreement on his one-year arbitration offer, the two parties had initial discussions regarding a three-year deal according to Daniel Barbarisi.  I am a fan of  Martin.  I like what I saw from his defense (although I’m far from a scout) – a… Continue reading

Martin catches Yankee intents

TAMPA — The Yankees’ catching plan was for Jorge Posada to pass the baton to one of the prospects they have been touting for years. But then Russell Martin fell into their lap and overcame hip and knee injuries last season to prove he is still one of the better catchers in the game. Continue reading

Sweet Lou Piniella to join the YES Network

The Yankees are bringing in a familiar name – former player, coach, manager, and nemisis – Lou Piniella, to join them as a special contributor at the YES Network this upcoming season, according to Bob Raissman of the NY Daily News. Rumors that he would join them in the broadcast booth go back to December and the Yankees have been trying to bring him back into the fold ever since he retired from managing. Lou was a fiery personality on the field and should be a funny personality on the camera as well in the Paul O’Neill mold. I look forward to seeing him this season. Yankees sign injured relief pitcher David Aardsma

The Yankees have signed David Aardsma, the former Red Sox reliever who had Tommy John Surgery last July, to a one-year deal with an option for 2013, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network. Aardsma, 30, is a hard throwing, fastball/slider type who was on the shelf last season even before TJS with hip and elbow injuries. He had a great 2009 season with the Mariners, putting up a 2.52 ERA, a 10/1 K/9, and a 4.3 BB/9. In 2010 he had another decent season with a 3.44 ERA, a 8.9 K/9, and a 4.5 BB/9. So there is some promise there. Being that he had surgery in July, he won’t be ready until the All-Star break at the earliest so he could be a nice midseason pickup. However, the real value in this deal is that it is a Jon Leiber type deal in that they are really signing him for next year. Hangin’ with Michael Pineda

In a new feature of the blog, we have started Hangin’, where we go off the field with the Yankees and learn a little more about them . In the Yankees clubhouse, there is a big sign over the doorway that says, “Compete.” Tucked in one corner of the room is the locker for CC Sabathia. Purposely, the Yankees have placed Manny Banuelos next to him on one side and Michael Pineda on the other. Pineda has watched CC since he was a young kid. When asked who else he has followed, Pineda mentioned Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez. Continue reading

Injured pitcher David Aardsma joins Yankees

Injured pitcher David Aardsma has agreed to a $500,000, one-year contract with the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old missed all of 2011. He started the season on the disabled list following surgery on the labrum of his left hip on Jan. 3 last year, felt arm soreness during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma from April 19-29, then had elbow-ligament replacement surgery in July. ”He’s someone with a lot of ability that we feel will be a benefit for us in the long run,” New York general manager Brian Cashman said. ”Maybe it’s more 2013, there’s an outside chance in 2012.” Selected by Colorado with the 22nd pick of the 2003 amateur draft, Aardsma is 13-15 with a 4.20 ERA in 254 relief appearances over six seasons. To clear a roster spot, the Yankees put left-hander Pedro Feliciano on the 60-day disabled list. Cashman said he talked with Aardsma throughout the offseason and the signing is not related to the possible retirement of closer Mariano Rivera after this season. Rivera gave hints on Monday that 2012 will be is final year and added that he won’t announce his long-term plans until possibly in October. He spent time playing catch with his kids after Wednesday’s workout – another sign this could be his final season. New York captain Derek Jeter told reporters Wednesday he knows what Rivera’s decision is but declined to share it. Aardsma is scheduled to join Yankees’ spring training camp on Monday. ”It’s an R-and-D move, research and development that we feel might have a nice payoff,” Cashman said. ”Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Cashman said the deal also includes a club option for 2013. Girardi: I did not concede the division in ’10

It is ancient history now, but Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that the team conceded the AL East in 2010. Does Joe Girardi agree with his boss? “I did not concede the division,” Girardi said. Girardi said he tried to win every game, losing the point that no one said he didn’t try to win, but that there were instances where he used Chad Gaudin instead of Mariano Rivera and that, at the end of the year, the Yankees turned to Dustin Moseley in Game 162 when they were in a tie for first place.
