Teixeira tells BBD that Mo won’t retire at season’s end

The following is a Bronx Baseball Daily exclusive from friend of the blog Lisa Held. After investing in a juice company called Juice Press, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was at an event celebrating the opening of a new location and got to talking about Mariano Rivera. Rivera has dropped hints this offseason that he might retire at the end of the season, but Teixeira isn’t buying it. “I don’t think he’s going to retire,” Teixeira said of Mo’s possible retirement. “I really think he has at least a few seasons left in him.” The slightly slimmed-down Teixeira is leaving for Spring Training this Thursday, after investing—personally and monetarily—in the company that makes cold-pressed vegetable and fruit juices during the off-season. Tex discovered Juice Press about four months ago, and has been drinking green juices (which are a blend of fresh fruits and vegetables) almost every day since. He’s also done several juice cleanses, periods where he refrains from eating and just d…

With an eye on possibly late this season but clearly focused on 2013, the Yankees signed right-handed reliever Dave Aardsma to a one-year deal Wednesday worth $500,000 and incentives. Hangin’ with Michael Pineda

In a new feature of the blog, we have started Hangin’, where we go off the field with the Yankees and learn a little more about them . In the Yankees clubhouse, there is a big sign over the doorway that says, “Compete.” Tucked in one corner of the room is the locker for CC Sabathia. Purposely, the Yankees have placed Manny Banuelos next to him on one side and Michael Pineda on the other. Pineda has watched CC since he was a young kid. When asked who else he has followed, Pineda mentioned Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez.

Injured pitcher David Aardsma joins Yankees

Injured pitcher David Aardsma has agreed to a $500,000, one-year contract with the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old missed all of 2011. He started the season on the disabled list following surgery on the labrum of his left hip on Jan. 3 last year, felt arm soreness during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma from April 19-29, then had elbow-ligament replacement surgery in July. ”He’s someone with a lot of ability that we feel will be a benefit for us in the long run,” New York general manager Brian Cashman said. ”Maybe it’s more 2013, there’s an outside chance in 2012.” Selected by Colorado with the 22nd pick of the 2003 amateur draft, Aardsma is 13-15 with a 4.20 ERA in 254 relief appearances over six seasons. To clear a roster spot, the Yankees put left-hander Pedro Feliciano on the 60-day disabled list. Cashman said he talked with Aardsma throughout the offseason and the signing is not related to the possible retirement of closer Mariano Rivera after this season. Rivera gave hints on Monday that 2012 will be is final year and added that he won’t announce his long-term plans until possibly in October. He spent time playing catch with his kids after Wednesday’s workout – another sign this could be his final season. New York captain Derek Jeter told reporters Wednesday he knows what Rivera’s decision is but declined to share it. Aardsma is scheduled to join Yankees’ spring training camp on Monday. ”It’s an R-and-D move, research and development that we feel might have a nice payoff,” Cashman said. ”Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Cashman said the deal also includes a club option for 2013.

Girardi: I did not concede the division in ’10

It is ancient history now, but Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that the team conceded the AL East in 2010. Does Joe Girardi agree with his boss? “I did not concede the division,” Girardi said. Girardi said he tried to win every game, losing the point that no one said he didn’t try to win, but that there were instances where he used Chad Gaudin instead of Mariano Rivera and that, at the end of the year, the Yankees turned to Dustin Moseley in Game 162 when they were in a tie for first place.

Joe on Joba: ‘He looked great’

We already have written about how I motivated Joba Chamberlain and how Joe Girardi didn’t know Joba’s exact schedule. Now we have Girardi’s reaction to watching Joba throwing on Tuesday. “He looked great,” Girardi said. “He looked really good to me. I thought the ball came out well. I thought mechanically he was very sound. He didn’t look tentative at all.” Joba is expected to throw off a mound on Tuesday. He is expected to be in the majors by June, at the earliest.
