New York Yankees Made Good Call By Not Extending Russell Martin

Even though New York Yankess fans are divided on how much value Russell Martin provided to the squad, many statistics – particularly defensive metrics – will reveal that he was a strong performer in 2011.  The main purpose of this post isn’t to discuss Russell Martin’s defense in detail so I’m not going to burden you with complicated algorithms to determine how many runs he saved the New York Yankees with his framing ability.  There is also the fact that I don’t quite remember where they are.  Anyway, the main point that I want to make here is that the New York Yankees are better off having NOT signed Russell Martin to a long-term extension this offseason. Prior to Martin and the Yankees coming to an agreement on his one-year arbitration offer, the two parties had initial discussions regarding a three-year deal according to Daniel Barbarisi.  I am a fan of  Martin.  I like what I saw from his defense (although I’m far from a scout) – a… Continue reading

Lou Piniella hired by Yankees’ YES Network

Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella has been hired by the team’s YES Network as a special contributor. Piniella will help with 20-30 events this year, including some game telecasts. He also is with the team as a spring training instructor in Tampa, Fla., near his home. A member of the Yankees’ World Series-winning teams in 1977 and `78, Piniella managed them from 1986-87, was general manager in 1988, then returned to the dugout that year. He managed Cincinnati from 1990-92, winning the Series in his first year, then managed Seattle, Tampa Bay and the Chicago Cubs. He was an analyst on the team’s MSG Network’s broadcasts in 1989. Says Piniella: ”It’s a thrill for me to be involved with the New York Yankees again and going back to my roots.” Continue reading

Quote: Nova’s arm strain 100 percent healed

Joe Girardi left everyone wondering what was going on in game five of the ALDS last season when he pulled Ivan Nova after just two innings. After the game he revealed he had suffered an arm strain and had to be pulled from the game. I didn’t give it much thought at the time as it seemed like an easy excuse for Girardi who seemed like he was panicking at the time. Part of me still feels like this entire thing is BS. But for what it’s worth, Nova told an AP reporter that his arm has completely healed. “It’s perfect,” Nova said. “100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.” Nova has been throwing for weeks already so they don’t seem worried about him at all. Despite the fact that the Yankees have six guys fighting for five rotation spots, the general assumption is that Nova’s spot is secure. Sweet Lou Piniella to join the YES Network

The Yankees are bringing in a familiar name – former player, coach, manager, and nemisis – Lou Piniella, to join them as a special contributor at the YES Network this upcoming season, according to Bob Raissman of the NY Daily News. Rumors that he would join them in the broadcast booth go back to December and the Yankees have been trying to bring him back into the fold ever since he retired from managing. Lou was a fiery personality on the field and should be a funny personality on the camera as well in the Paul O’Neill mold. I look forward to seeing him this season. Nova has no lingering forearm issues

Ivan Nova’s arm feels fine, and he says there are no aftereffects of the injury that cut short his start in Game 5 of the AL division series as the New York Yankees were eliminated. After leading major league rookies in wins last season, Nova got the win in the rain-interrupted opener against Detroit. But he lost the series final, leaving after just two inning because of a strained flexor in his right forearm. Nova healed without complications, and the right-hander began throwing off a mound well before spring training. ”It’s perfect,” he said Wednesday. ”100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.” Nova was 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 27 starts and one relief appearance despite spending most of July in the minor leagues. ”I just want to be in the rotation and I want to win games.” he said. ”I don’t mind if I’m number one, two, three, four, five.” New York won his final 12 starts, and he became the Yankees’ No. 2 starter behind CC Sabathia. ”There’s a quiet confidence to him right now, and it’s good to see it,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. ”I thought that last year early, we scored some runs for him and I think it helped him get some wins and then he got some confidence from that. Then you saw him pitch the way that he’s capable of.” New York appears to have an abundance of starting pitchers, signing Hideki Kuroda and acquiring Michael Pineda from Seattle to join Sabathia, Nova, Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia. ”We have six weeks to iron that out,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ”The best-case scenario for us is that everyone’s throwing well and there are no injuries and there are no setbacks and you have to make a tough decision. I can tell you CC’s going to start opening day, and then we go from there and try and figure out how everyone else lines up and who our five starters are.” Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner is upbeat, citing the team’s pitching. New York’s bullpen includes career saves leader Mariano Rivera, and setup men David Robertson and Rafael Soriano. ”Our pitchers from top to bottom, the starters and the relievers, are deep and hopefully they’ll all have good years,” Steinbrenner said. ”Even if a couple have off years, we’ve got so much depth. But hopefully all will be good. ”Our hitting, as always, will be good or good enough. I’m pleased with what Brian (Cashman) was able to get done.” Steinbrenner expects tough competition in the AL East. ”We realize it. The Red Sox realize it. The Rays realize it. You never know what the Blue Jays or Orioles will do at any given time,” Steinbrenner said. ”The American League is very tough, and the American League East is the best division in baseball, period. It just is, top to bottom.” Notes: Girardi said he likes the proposed one-game wild-card playoff plan. ”I think it makes it very interesting,” he said. ”I think the excitement of that one-game playoff is good for baseball.” … RHP Joba Chamberlain (elbow ligament replacement surgery) threw 30 pitches in his latest session off a 5-inch half-mound and remains on target to throw off a full mound Tuesday. … Closer Mariano Rivera threw on 60 feet on level ground. No date has been announced for his first bullpen session. … Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella joined the YES Network as a special contributor. Continue reading

Yankees sign injured relief pitcher David Aardsma

The Yankees have signed David Aardsma, the former Red Sox reliever who had Tommy John Surgery last July, to a one-year deal with an option for 2013, according to Jack Curry of the YES Network. Aardsma, 30, is a hard throwing, fastball/slider type who was on the shelf last season even before TJS with hip and elbow injuries. He had a great 2009 season with the Mariners, putting up a 2.52 ERA, a 10/1 K/9, and a 4.3 BB/9. In 2010 he had another decent season with a 3.44 ERA, a 8.9 K/9, and a 4.5 BB/9. So there is some promise there. Being that he had surgery in July, he won’t be ready until the All-Star break at the earliest so he could be a nice midseason pickup. However, the real value in this deal is that it is a Jon Leiber type deal in that they are really signing him for next year. Teixeira tells BBD that Mo won’t retire at season’s end

The following is a Bronx Baseball Daily exclusive from friend of the blog Lisa Held. After investing in a juice company called Juice Press, Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira was at an event celebrating the opening of a new location and got to talking about Mariano Rivera. Rivera has dropped hints this offseason that he might retire at the end of the season, but Teixeira isn’t buying it. “I don’t think he’s going to retire,” Teixeira said of Mo’s possible retirement. “I really think he has at least a few seasons left in him.” The slightly slimmed-down Teixeira is leaving for Spring Training this Thursday, after investing—personally and monetarily—in the company that makes cold-pressed vegetable and fruit juices during the off-season. Tex discovered Juice Press about four months ago, and has been drinking green juices (which are a blend of fresh fruits and vegetables) almost every day since. He’s also done several juice cleanses, periods where he refrains from eating and just d… Continue reading

Injured pitcher David Aardsma joins Yankees

Injured pitcher David Aardsma has agreed to a $500,000, one-year contract with the New York Yankees. The 30-year-old missed all of 2011. He started the season on the disabled list following surgery on the labrum of his left hip on Jan. 3 last year, felt arm soreness during a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Tacoma from April 19-29, then had elbow-ligament replacement surgery in July. ”He’s someone with a lot of ability that we feel will be a benefit for us in the long run,” New York general manager Brian Cashman said. ”Maybe it’s more 2013, there’s an outside chance in 2012.” Selected by Colorado with the 22nd pick of the 2003 amateur draft, Aardsma is 13-15 with a 4.20 ERA in 254 relief appearances over six seasons. To clear a roster spot, the Yankees put left-hander Pedro Feliciano on the 60-day disabled list. Cashman said he talked with Aardsma throughout the offseason and the signing is not related to the possible retirement of closer Mariano Rivera after this season. Rivera gave hints on Monday that 2012 will be is final year and added that he won’t announce his long-term plans until possibly in October. He spent time playing catch with his kids after Wednesday’s workout – another sign this could be his final season. New York captain Derek Jeter told reporters Wednesday he knows what Rivera’s decision is but declined to share it. Aardsma is scheduled to join Yankees’ spring training camp on Monday. ”It’s an R-and-D move, research and development that we feel might have a nice payoff,” Cashman said. ”Nothing ventured, nothing gained.” Cashman said the deal also includes a club option for 2013.
