Rapid Reaction: Yanks 6, Dodgers 4 (Gm. 1)
NEW YORK — The Yankees, who suffered through a five-game losing skid on the West Coast, are now on a modest two-game win streak — at the expense of both Los Angeles franchises — after beating the Dodgers 6-4 at Yankee Stadium in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. What it means: That the Dodgers’ return to the Bronx after a 32-year absence was not quite as pleasant as the last time they were here, celebrating the end of the 1981 World Series. Continue reading

First Pitch: Cano on display
A baseball official monitoring the potential Robinson Cano sweeptakes said he thought the Yankees’ biggest rivals for Cano, if he hits free agency, would not be the Dodgers, but the Phillies or the Cubs. The Phillies, who are in the midst of one of those gazillion dollar new TV deals, would have to decide if they wanted to turn to Cano and turn away from Chase Utley, while the Cubs could look to fast-forward their rebuilding process. The official thought that Cano would end up with $200 million over eight years. Continue reading
The Binder or Donnie Baseball?
Here is the start of my column. In late October of 2007, Hank Steinbrenner was the Baby Boss. Outside the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., a handful of New York reporters huddled in full stakeout mode, waiting each day for a few words from Hank on who would be the next manager. Don Mattingly was thought to be the favorite to replace Joe Torre. Earlier in the month, Torre and the Yankees finalized their divorce, opening up one of the biggest jobs in sports. Continue reading

Yanks grab a big win on getaway day
ANAHEIM — Nothing comes easy for the Yankees these days, not even when they take a six-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning with CC Sabathia still on the mound and David Robertson and Mariano Rivera fresh and rested in their bullpen. There was no way they could lose this game, and then suddenly, there sure as heck was as the Los Angeles Angels suddenly trailed by a single run and had the bases loaded with Albert Pujols at the plate. It was the kind of showdown baseball fans would pay to see any day of the week, Pujols vs. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Angels 6, Yankees 2
ANAHEIM — Just when you thought things could hardly get worse, a day of multiple losses for the Yankees. First, the game — a 6-2 defeat to the Angels. Yet another one in which the bats roused themselves for one inning, the third, then rolled over to resume the lumber slumber they’ve been in for past week or so. But worse than that, in the fourth inning, they also lost Mark Teixeira to a recurrence of the wrist injury that cost him the first two months of the season. Continue reading
First Pitch: The Young Pitching Story
Saturday’s starter David Phelps has solidified the No. 5 spot. In eight starts since May 1, Phelps, 26, is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 45 1/3 innings. Adam Warren, 25, posted a 3.12 ERA in 34 2/3 innings as the long man. Preston Claiborne, 25, has walked just one batter and allowed only two earned runs in his first 21 innings in the bigs. Vidal Nuno, 25, had a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings, which included three solid starts. There is no Matt Harvey among them, but young, controllable pitching has emerged in 2013 and beyond. Continue reading

Postgame notes: What highlights?
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Not many highlights from tonight’s 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Yankees’ fourth straight after being swept by the Athletics in Oakland. — Thomas Neal, recalled today from Triple-A Scranton and making his first start for the Yankees, had his first hit for them in the sixth inning (he had had five for the Cleveland Indians last year). He also played an acceptable right field. — Chris Bootcheck, also recalled today, did not fare as well. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Angels 5, Yankees 2
ANAHEIM — This Yankee season is turning into one long toothache, a dull throbbing pain that never seems to subside. First, the good news — they snapped their scoreless streak at 21 1/3 innings, one that began with the final 17 2/3 of Thursday’s loss to the Athletics. The bad news? They’re working on another one, 5 1/3 and counting. And with Andy Pettitte having an off night, they really had no shot in this one. What it means: That the Yankees have now lost four straight, five of their last seven. Continue reading
