Postgame notes: The Forgotten Man
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — With the Yankees, and Curtis Granderson, suffering yet another crippling injury, the game itself — a 9-4 Yankees win, only their fourth in the last 17 games they’ve played at the Trop — almost seemed secondary. But there were non-injury-related stories, to wit: Ben Francisco#45 RFNew York Yankees2013 STATS GM21 HR1 RBI1 R4 OBP.220 AVG.114• Robinson Cano was credited with a hit-by-pitch, and an RBI, when HP umpire John Hirschbeck ruled Cano was hit by Cesar Ramos’ fifth-inning pitch. First Pitch: First ‘big’ series of 2013
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There is no longer any argument that the Yankees, at 28-18 and atop the AL East by a game despite having nearly a dozen players on the disabled list, have overperformed. And one could certainly make the argument that the Tampa Bay Rays, who a year ago had the same 28-18 record and led the division by a game, have underperformed, thanks in large part to their 5-10 start. But one thing no one can dispute is that despite how well the Yankees have played through their adversity, once again no one is running away with the AL East, which remains as tight as Tom Jones’ pants. The Yankees and the Ewing Theory
Are the 2013 Yankees an example of the Ewing Theory, made famous by Bill Simmons? The theory, devised by Simmons’ friend Dave Cirilli, has two elements: 1. A star athlete receives an inordinate amount of media attention and fan interest, yet his teams never win anything substantial with him (other than maybe some early-round playoff series). 2. That same athlete leaves his team — either by injury, trade, graduation, free agency or retirement — and both the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season. Nuno ‘can’t be perfect’ in 10th
Vidal Nuno represents what Phil Hughes once did. The thing about a rookie is that the slate is completely clean and fans can let their imaginations loose to dream. Hughes was supposed to be a No. 1 and is now more a No. 4 or 5. Nuno is an out-of-nowhere story, the first Vidal to make the majors, and he had not given up a run in his initial eight big league innings. On Tuesday night, the Yankees lost 3-2 in 10 innings against the Orioles. It happens. Continue reading

It’s all about Mo
The miraculous 2013 Yankees formula displayed many of its unexplainable parts Monday. But, on final analysis, what separated the Yankees and the Orioles is the same thing that has been the difference between the Yankees and everyone else since the mid-’90s. The Yankees have Mariano Rivera. Other teams don’t. While Orioles closer Jim Johnson folded for the third straight time with a save on the line, the 43-year-old Rivera trotted out for his 17th save in 17 tries. Continue reading
Pregame notes: Good news on injuries
BALTIMORE — While the Yankees are not expected to have anyone come off the disabled list during this eight-game road trip, Joe Girardi was in a chipper mood because there was some positive news on many of the injuries. “All our guys are increasing their activity,” Girardi said. Let’s take them by one-by-one. • Mark Teixeira (wrist) took live at-bats in a simulated game, allowing him to bat right-handed and left-handed. “It is definite progress for him,” Girardi said. Teixeira hits for first time
Mark Teixeira, who has been out all year with a right wrist injury, took at-bats down in Tampa on Monday, making a return in June a stronger possiblity. Teixiera tweeted that he went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Felt good to get my first AB’s since March. 1-2 with a double and a walk, I’ll take it. #Yankees in first place, I’ll take that too!— Mark Teixeira (@teixeiramark25) May 20, 2013 Before Monday, Teixeira had only taken batting practice.
