The Binder or Donnie Baseball?
Here is the start of my column. In late October of 2007, Hank Steinbrenner was the Baby Boss. Outside the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., a handful of New York reporters huddled in full stakeout mode, waiting each day for a few words from Hank on who would be the next manager. Don Mattingly was thought to be the favorite to replace Joe Torre. Earlier in the month, Torre and the Yankees finalized their divorce, opening up one of the biggest jobs in sports. Continue reading

Dodgers vs. Yankees TV schedule, starting pitching matchups
For the first time ever the Dodgers will play the Yankees in New York during the regular season. It only took 17 years of interleague play to pit the two storied rivals against one another in their original setting. Here is a look at the television schedule and pitching matchup for the brief two-game series beginning Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. Tuesday, 4:05 p.m. (KCAL, MLB Network) Hyun-jin Ryu starts the opener on five days rest after giving up a season-high 11 hits in his last start. Ryu has three straight quality starts and has allowed nine runs in his last six starts, with a 1.94 ERA during that span. After walking no more than two batters in each of his first 12 starts, Phil Hughes walked five in his last start. Hughes starts the opener for the Yankees, looking to turn around his 6.17 ERA over his last seven starts. Wednesday, 4:05 p.m. (Prime Ticket, ESPN2) Chris Capuano is expected to be activated from the disabled list to start the final game in The Bronx, making his first major league start since May 29. Capuano is 8-7 with a 4.66 ERA in 20 games, including 19 starts in interleague play in his career. The Dodgers for the first time face old friend Hiroki Kuroda , who at 38 is having yet another solid season. Kuroda has been especially good at Yankee Stadium, at 4-2 with a 1.96 ERA in six starts, with 27 strikeouts and just seven walks. Continue reading
Yankees injury updates: Pineda, Granderson, A-Rod, Youkilis, Jeter
Brian Cashman spoke to reporters about the Yankees’ injuries and Chad Jennings at LoHud summarizes everything nicely. Michael Pineda will pitch on Thursday for the Tampa-A Yankees and will increase his pitch count to 80 pitches. The Yankees have him on a customized rehab program where he will be increasing his pitch count by eight pitches each time out, rather than the customary 15 pitches. His last start was a simulated game where he gave up three hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.2 innings. He threw 74 pitches, 57 of them for strikes. He has been sitting around 92 mph and hitting 94-95 mph. The two leading candidates for Pineda to replace at this point are Phil Hughes and David Phelps . Though this will never happen, Hughes has a 4.89 ERA and 4.60 FIP, while Phelps has a 3.68 ERA and 3.49 FIP, Hughes seems to be the one to go if Pineda proves to be ready at the end of his 30-day rehab assignment. Curtis Granderson will have the pin removed from his knuckle on the 20th and then will be able to begin a short rehab assignment before returning to the team, again. He had a pin put in his broken pinky knuckle in order to ensure that the bone stays in place and heals properly. The surgery to insert it was minor and did not alter his recovery time of one month. He’ll need a week of strength and grip exercises before he can even swing a bat again. The Yankees desperately need an upgrade in the outfield. Brett Gardner has been one of the teams best hitters, but Ichiro Suzuki is only producing at a decent clip and Vernon Wells has been terrible. When Granderson returns he could force Wells into a reserve role and get his league-leading -0.4 WAR out of the lineup. Alex Rodriguez will face live pitchers for the first time on Tuesday. He started running the bases over the weekend and has upped his rehab considerably. He has been fielding ground balls to his left and right, as well as slow rollers. Yankees third baseman in 2013 have produced a grand total of 0 WAR. That’s Youkilis, David Adams , Jayson Nix , and Chris Nelson and only Adams and Nix have accumulated a total of 0.5 WAR. A-Rod could be a huge help to the team at this point because you can’t really do much worse. The Yankees still have no test results from Kevin Youkilis going to see a doctor in California. Until then it’s hard to know what his timetable is. Even though he’s on the 15-day disabled list, he could be out for much longer depending on the severity of the injury. Asked why the Yankees thought it was a good idea to sign him in the first place, Brian Cashman stated that “it had to do with Youkilis coming through his offseason physical with flying colors and the comfort level knowing the White Sox offered him a two-year deal and that’s where he just came from.” The injury to Youkilis further depletes an already barren depth chart in the wake of the Yankees losing Mark Teixeira again. Lyle Overbay will be the starting first baseman, but he has been terrible against lefties. The platoon of Adams and Nix also leaves something to be desired. Derek Jeter did tee and toss and took 15 swings during caged batting practice. He also fielded 20 ground balls, moving side-to-side and throwing to first base. If Derek Jeter could actually come back this year that would be nice. He could kick Reid Brignac off the roster. Eduardo Nunez fielded 30 ground balls today, did tee and toss and long toss. Brian Cashman seemed skeptical that he would be back before the All-Star break. Nunez has been incredibly disappointing this season before he went down from a seemingly mild injury and then disappeared. I don’t expect much from him going forward. Francisco Cervelli did long toss and receiving drills and could be a week away from singing a bat underwater. He won’t be back until mid-July at this point. Even if he doesn’t return to the level of play he was at before he got hurt, Cervelli would be a marked improvement over Austin Romine’s .132/.148/.170 for the season. On top of that, Ronnier Mustelier , Melky Mesa , and Sam Demel were all just added to the Triple-DL and Vidal Nuno , Brennan Boesch , and Corban Joseph are still not playing. To mitigate these injuries, the Yankees just signed famed ballplayer Randy Ruiz out of the Mexican League, who was with the Trenton Thunder back in 2006, has a .272/.332/.488 in 238 plate appearances for the Twins and Blue Jays , and is a 35-year-old DH/1B. Aslo, he was suspended for a PED violation too. This is what it has come to. Continue reading
Pineda continues to look good
While the big news on Monday is Mark Teixeira likely going back on the DL and Brian Cashman taking a major dig at his hitting coach, Kevin Long, there were — as always — some injury updates as well. • Michael Pineda will pitch Thursday in a Florida State League game. Pineda has been throwing in the mid-to-low 90s and Cashman is thrilled with his rehab progress thus far. This will be Pineda’s third start, and he will throw about 80 pitches. Continue reading

The Yankees offense as early-nineties performance art
A few days ago I watched the HBO documentary Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer – a fascinating meditation on the state of freedom of expression and religion in modern Russia. For those not familiar with the story, five girls in sleeveless dresses and balaclavas performed an impromptu punk show in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior to protest the policies of Vladimir Putin. Three of the members were tracked down and sentenced to two years in prison. Let me tell you something, Russians – as far as performance art goes, watching girls in ski mask-thingies dance in one of your holiest shrines isn’t nearly as offensive as watching the Yankees offense these days. Before yesterday’s six-run explosion, the Yankees scored two runs in four straight games, including game which lasted 18 innings. The last time they scored in more than two innings of a game was June 3. I could throw some individual stats up there, but why bother? The phrase “worst offense since the early nineties” has been bandied about a lot recently. According to our own Michael Brown , the 2013 Yankees have achieved a level of offensive impotence not seen since 1990. In terms of a baseball team trying to stay in the playoff hunt, maintaining an early-nineties level of Yankee offense is simply untenable; but as a bizarre piece of retro nineties performance art, this offense works fine. People are nuts for nineties nostalgia right now; seemingly every popular TV show and movie from the period is being remade. The Yankees offense has all the retro nineties charm of this totally rad “Home Improvement” tape measure I found in the basement last week…the only difference being that the tape measure actually still works. As a full-on remake of the Stump Merrill era, the Yankees offense has done a pretty good (bad) job so far, but with a few subtle tweaks, they could be so much better (worse). I’ve prepared a list of helpful tips designed to bring the Yankees completely back to the early nineties “golden age”, before punks like Derek Jeter and Paul O’Neill started mucking things up. 1. Mustaches and nerd glasses for all! This is Alvaro Espinoza – perhaps the quintessential early-nineties Yankee. His slash lines for his three years in pinstripes: 1989: .282/.301/.332 1990: .224/.258/.274 1991: .256/.282/.344 Sure, there are three or four middle infielders on the 2013 Yankees roster capable of matching that “production”, but they just don’t have the same panache. What guys like Nix, Reid Brignac , and David Adams need to do is take each at bat with a creepy mustache and glasses straight from one of the Golden Girls – no Oakleys for these bros. I want to see creepy mustaches on every Yankee, except Joba Chamberlain . Joba already tried the ‘stache, and it didn’t work…like everything else he’s tried this season. 2. Dirty up the Yankee viewing experience. Ah, the early nineties – a time when you could still experience the old Stadium in all its dank and dirty glory. I loved that place with all my soul. The Steinbrenners tore the old girl down, of course. They said Yankees fans deserved a modern, swanky environment, complete with Mohegan Sun steakhouses or whatever the hell they have back there. Well I say get rid of the swank and bring back the dank! They need to dirty up the place, post-haste. As for Yankees broadcasts, I say get rid of the high definition feed altogether. There was no HD back in the early nineties. And, when you think about it, is your viewing experience really enhanced by watching Vernon Wells strike out in high def? 3. Scootergram An old-school, low-def broadcast probably isn’t enough – we need the voice of those old Yankee teams. Ever since the Tupac hologram debuted at Coachella, we have had the technology to bring Phil Rizzuto back to the broadcast booth. If a new generation of fans must suffer through this lineup, they should at least have the Scooter to guide them. His detractors liked to point at that the Scooter often lost track of the game itself, choosing instead to blather on about lasagna for innings at a time. I say, so what if the Scooter hologram only wants to talk about food? It’ll be a far cry better than the insufferable food banter coming out of the Michael Kay booth. 4. Two words: Donnie Baseball This season hasn’t been a cakewalk for Don Mattingly, either – his Dodgers are mired in last place in the NL West, his job may be in jeopardy, and he appears to be auditioning for a post-managerial career in MMA . Hopefully this means the Yankees can pry him away from the Dodgers – not to coach, but to play. I say screw it, put Donnie Baseball back on the field. Mark Teixeira is hurt again, and God only knows when he’ll be back. I’m betting that 52-year-old Donnie can still hit lefties better than Lyle Overbay . Only one thing, Don, you need to grow back the mustache (see: #1). 5. We need a Stankiewicz…any Stankiewicz One of the joys of watching those old teams was the fact that they had a guy named Andy Stankiewicz – not much of a player, but his name alone was worth 4.5 joeWAR in my book. I couldn’t help but notice the Red Sox just drafted and signed a pitcher named Teddy Stankiewicz (no relation). We need to pry this Stankiewicz away from the Sox…and put him in the lineup immediately. To those of you who think that it would be reckless to put a pitcher into the lineup, I want you to think about Reid Brignac for a moment. His OPS+ is -32. Minus thirty-two. Do you honestly think that a pitcher – or even, say, an accountant – would put up hitting numbers worse than minus thirty-two ? Will any of these moves help the Yankees on the field? Of course not. But unless the Yankees start getting some starters back (and I mean really back – not “this week’s Texeira and Youkilis” back) then this is the lineup we’re going to have to live with for a while. I say pop in a Boyz II Men cassette into your boombox and enjoy the ride. Continue reading

Yankees promote Rafael De Paula and Dietrich Enns to High-A Tampa
Finally, after utterly dominating the competition in the South Atlantic League with the Low-A Charleston RiverDogs, Rafael De Paula has been promoted . He will join the High-A Tampa Yankees in a rotation that already includes Shane Greene , Bryan Mitchell , Scottie Allen , Sean Black, and will be replacing the recently promoted Corey Black . Greene and Black may have also been promoted to Double-A, as well. The Yankees initially stated they wouldn’t promote De Paula this season, despite already being 23, in order to let him acclimate to pitching in America, but it was clear he was doing just fine. Fans have been clamoring for him to move up and face better quality hitters so he can prove he is legitimate. Now the fans get what they want. In his first year of American baseball, De Paula has a 2.94 ERA with a 2.03 FIP, a monstrous 13.43 K/9 and a 3.22 BB/9 in 64.1 innings and 13 starts. His 96 strikeouts currently place fourth in the minor leagues, just two away from the leader, who has actually faced 66 more hitters than De Paula has. He signed a $500,000 contract out of the Dominican Republic back in 2010, but visa issues held him out of the country until 2013. It seems that the Yankees’ dedication to him, after years of waiting, has finally paid off. Charleston reliever Dietrich Enns has also been promoted to High-A Tampa after compiling a 0.81 ERA and a 1.24 FIP, with a 14.01 K/9 and 2.84 BB/9 in 44.1 innings. Of the three earned runs he has allowed this season, only two of them were given up as a reliever. He could have been Charleston’s closer, but they seem to be using a closer by committee method. Enns was drafted in the 19th round of the 2012 draft and has already pitched better over more innings than he did last season. This is when we find out if he’s for real. Both De Paula and Enns were promoted before the SAL All-Star Game, so they will be replaced by relievers Alex Smith and Ben Paullus. Midseason promotions should be ramping up in the next few days, so look for players like Gary Sanchez , Peter O’Brien, and Greg Bird to get moved up a level. Continue reading

Postgame notes: Pitchers as targets
ANAHEIM — Practically lost in the pleasant surprise of the New York Yankees bats suddenly reawakening for six runs Sunday, as well as the unsettling near-collapse of their two best relievers in the ninth inning, was the frightening sight of two pitchers being hit hard by batted balls late in the game. First, it was CC Sabathia getting nailed by a shot in the torso off the bat of Mike Trout in the sixth inning. And in the ninth, David Robertson took a liner from Mark Trumbo in the right thigh. Pregame notes: Loose and looser
ANAHEIM — For a team that has lost five straight games for the second time in a month, that is facing a series sweep for the second time in a week, and that is scoring fewer runs per game than any Yankees team in the past 25 years, the Yanks were a pretty loose group this morning heading into this afternoon’s series finale against the Angels. The movie “Dumb and Dumber,” a clubhouse staple at Angel Stadium, was on the TV screens and being greatly enjoyed by a small group of players, while “And Then I Got High,” a novelty comedy song from Afroman from a few years back, blared out of the players’ food room.
