First Pitch: Cashman making the grade

When you look at the Yankees’ first half, there is only one way to describe it. “Great,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. “The best record in baseball. We are in first. I’ll take it. I hope it lines up for a strong second half.” The Yankees lost Michael Pineda before the season’s first pitch. Mariano Rivera and Brett Gardner have barely played. David Robertson has missed significant time. Alex Rodriguez is only a good, not great or elite, third baseman. Continue reading

Missing Links: Mariano, Joba, Reggie & Robbie

Let’s do some All-Star Missing Links: 1) Mariano Rivera has always refused to say he is done for this season. He is known for his faith and, when asked for a timetable, he has pointed to God’s plan for him. Still, led by most notably Yankees GM Brian Cashman, the Yankees have insisted that Rivera won’t be able to return this season from his partially torn ACL. But his rehab doctor, Dr. Keith Pyne, opened up a little crack for a possible return this year. Continue reading

First Pitch: Christian Lopez’s big decision

Nick Laham/Getty ImagesWould Christian Lopez change anything about last year’s DJ-3K exchange? Nope.It has been a year and a day since Christian Lopez caught Derek Jeter’s 3,000th hit. Lopez made the decision to just give Jeter the ball instead of holding out for potentially millions. The Decision will be debated forever. What would you do? Well, Lopez, now 24, with a new life, would not do anything different. “I get a lot of respect,” Lopez said on the phone Monday. Continue reading

Notes: Rotation, Martin, Gardner, Joba

Joe Girardi has set his second half rotation. Next weekend against the Angels, it will be Hiroki Kuroda, Freddy Garcia and Ivan Nova. They will be followed by Phil Hughes, CC Sabathia and Kuroda against the Blue Jays. Girardi said he set things up that way because of some matchups he liked. He didn’t say what they were. Speaking of Sabathia, he had a successful bullpen session on Sunday and reported no pain in his groin. He will throw another bullpen Tuesday before a simulated game on Friday, and then he expects to be good to go a week from Tuesday against the Blue Jays. Continue reading

Padilla to Tex: Go play a ‘women’s sport’

Vicente Padilla just took his war of words with Mark Teixeira to another level, slinging veiled accusations of racism and making a sexist comment in a Spanish-language interview translated and posted by NESN.com on Sunday. “In this sport, as competitive ball players, we get pretty fired up,” Padilla said, according to NESN. “So I think, maybe, [Teixeira] picked the wrong profession. I think he’d be better off playing a women’s sport.” Teixeira scorched Padilla at the plate Friday with his go-ahead two-run triple and after the game with his words. Continue reading

First Pitch: Clutch 42

On May 21, the Yankees were 21-21. They were 42 games into their season, and there were questions about this team. When they were hitting, they weren’t pitching. When they pitched, they didn’t hit. Their starting pitching was suspect. Their offense was too old and one-dimensional, with its all-or-nothing attributes. But now the Yankees have played 42 more games, and most of those questions have vanished. Over the past 42 games, the Yankees are 30-12, and have made any concerns look a little silly in hindsight. Continue reading
