Andy Pettitte’s Injury Will Truly Test Yankees’ Magic, As New York Can’t Afford to Lose Starting Pitching
Let’s see what rabbit the Yankees pull out of their hat this time, because Andy Pettitte’s trip to the disabled list will really test New York’s magic. The Yankees have been one of the biggest surprises in baseball this season, not because they’re winning, but because they’re winning with spare parts. The Bronx Bombers have been without many of their stars, including Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira and Curtis Granderson, yet they’ve clawed their way to the top of the American League East. Those setbacks, while major, pale in comparison to Pettitte’s injury, though. The Yankees find themselves in first place largely because of their starting pitching, and Pettitte has been a big part of that. The overall numbers — 4-3 record, 3.83 ERA, 1.30 WHIP — aren’t eye-popping, but Pettitte has been very consistent with the exception of one outing. The lefty gave up seven earned runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Astros on April 29, but he’s allowed three runs or fewer in… Continue reading →

Yankees set AL record with win against Toronto
When Curtis Granderson caught the final out of today’s game, the Yankees set a new American League record. The team, that has been decimated by injuries and picked against since the beginning of the season, is now 18-0 when scoring first. The Yankees are the only team in the major leagues who have yet to lose whenever they push the first run across. The franchise record for most consecutive wins when scoring first is 19, set in 2002. This record speaks volumes about the team’s grittiness and pitching, which has been the strength of this club so far this season. When the Yankees score first, their starters do a good job of maintaining a lead or giving the offense a chance to stay in the game. The back end of the bullpen is also a big reason why the “no-name” Yankees have been able to rack up the W’s. The team is an amazing 21-0 when leading after six innings. Setup man David Robertson has pitched to a 2.76 ERA with 20 strikeouts in 16.1 innings. Lefty Boone Logan has a 2.31 ERA with with 13 K’s in Continue reading →

Yankees acquire Reid Brignac
The Yankees have made another move to add some depth at the big league level, as they have acquired utility man Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash. Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez has been designated for assignment. Brignac, 27, represents versatility and a slight upgrade offensively from Gonzalez. In his career, Brignac has played shortstop, second base and the outfield. He spent five years with the AL East rival Rays, before being traded to Colorado in February. He was designated for assignment on Thursday, so the Yankees scooped him up. A lefty, New York hopes he can utilize the short-porch in right field. However, he is more known for his glove than his bat. This season, Brignac is hitting .250 with a homer and six RBIs. For his career, he is a .228 hitter. He is expected to be with the team for tomorrow’s series finale with the Jays. #Yankees acquire INF Reid Brignac from Rockies in exchange for cash considerations. Yankees place Andy Pettitte on DL
New York Yankees left-handed starting pitcher Andy Pettitte exited his last start due to injury, and the club placed him on the 15-day disabled list yesterday with a strained left trapezius muscle, according to Kieran Darcy of ESPN New York. General manager Brian Cashman told reporters that the team doesn’t consider the upper shoulder/back injury to be “overly serious,” adding that they want to “play it safe.” Pettitte was surprised by the DL transaction, and he believes the decision could be “overly cautious.” However, the veteran understands the move considering the team’s current rough stretch. “It could be overly cautious, but I also understand,” Pettitte said. “I probably need a few days to let it calm down before I can throw a bullpen, and I need to pitch on Tuesday, and they don’t want to send me out there in Baltimore on Tuesday and start warming up and it locked up and then we don’t have pitching. We’re on a tough st… Continue reading →

Whats luck got to do with it?
It’s May 18th and the Yankees are sitting atop the AL East which comes as a surprise to many for a plethora of reasons. No one thought the Yankees could continue their dominance for going on two decades, even if the Yankees were healthy. Right now, on the Yankee’s disabled list, sits names like Jeter, Rodriguez, Teixeira, Youkilis, Chamberlin and now Pettitte. So how are the Yankees still winning? One of the main reasons is the revival of outfielder Vernon Wells. Wells has had a very good career just by looking at his overall numbers. He has 269 home runs, 931 RBI and is a .273 career hitter. But, since 2010, his offensive numbers have been on the decline. So what is Wells doing differently this year compared to years past? He’s having a little bit better luck then he has had in the previous seasons. Just look at his BABIP. For those who don’t know, BABIP is Batting Average for Ball In Play. Essentially, it is Wells’ batting average of just the balls he hits in fair territory. Wells has a current BA Continue reading →

The New York Yankees are little more than middling contenders without Andy Pettitte
After leaving in the fifth inning of a 3-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night in New York, borderline Hall of Fame Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte was sent to the 15-day disabled list with a strained trapezius muscle. A three-time All-Star who has captured five crowns in pinstripes, the 6-foot-5, 225 pound Pettitte (4-3, 3.83 ERA) is one of the primary reasons New York sits atop the American League East with a record of 25-16. Using a piercing cutter and pinpoint control, Yankees fans can realistically expect Pettitte to win 15 games with the backing of an extremely … Continue reading → Continue reading →

Pettitte heads to DL
It’s almost becoming laughable. Another Yankee has landed on the disabled list – this time it’s Andy Pettitte’s turn, according to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News. Pettitte felt tightness in his trapezius muscle last night in the fifth inning and was removed from the game. Although the team isn’t worried about the injury and believe it to be minor, they are being careful with the soon-to-be 41-year-old veteran. Vidal Nuno, who pitched in game two of Monday’s doubleheader against Cleveland, will take Pettitte’s spot in the rotation. The Yankees will give Pettitte some time with the hopes that he won’t be shelved for longer than 15 days. Cashman: “This is the safe play. … Thankfully it’s minor.” — Mark Feinsand (@FeinsandNYDN) May 17, 2013 Continue reading →

Steinbrenner calls Yankees ‘scrappy’
One word which is never usually associated with the New York Yankees is “scrappy.” Powerful, favored, high-priced and sometimes maybe even underachieving are words more apt to be used in describing the makeup of the team. That was until Hal Steinbrenner referred to his team with the S-word in describing the depleted Yankees’ surprisingly success a quarter into the 2013 season and holding forth on his commitment to get the payroll below the luxury-tax threshold of $189 million for 2014. “I’m proud of them, my family’s proud of them,”said Steinbrenner following an owner’s meeting at Major League Baseball’s Manhattan headquarters Thursday. “They’ve been fighting hard all year long, and despite significant adversity, they’ve persevered. It’s fun to watch. They’re scrappy. Coming from behind, it seems like certain times in the past, it’s not something you had confidence in.” The Yankees are 25-16 and in first place, a game ahead Continue reading →

Yankees: Teixeira causing an Overbay problem
No one hypothesized that the New York Yankees would be anything less than joyful and relieved to get back their wounded superstars. Mark Teixeira on the basepaths during a game between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles on August 26, 2011 (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Of course, no one assumed this haphazard army of reserves would be winning enough games to be atop of the AL East either. You can check out available MLB future odds to see that the Yankees are now one of the favorites to win the 2013 World Series, a spot this team was far from just six weeks ago. Everyone getting this team wrong doesn’t change the fact the Yankees are now in a pickle. Some might even call it a catch-22, as their pricey stars start getting healthy. Curtis Granderson came off the DL earlier this week, which gives skipper Joe Girardi some relief in the outfield. Granderson has played his whole career in centerfield but was started in left. This essentially would put Vernon Wells out of a job he has d… Continue reading →

Pettitte exits with apparent injury
Andy Pettitte left the New York Yankees’ game against Seattle on Thursday night in the fifth inning with an apparent injury. Trailing 2-1, Pettitte struck out Kyle Seager for the second out of the fifth and reached for his right side. Yankees manager Joe Girardi went to the mound accompanied by pitching coach Larry Rothschild and a trainer. They spoke with Pettitte for a while, then Pettitte trotted to the dugout and was replaced by Shawn Kelley, a former Seattle pitcher. Pettitte allowed two runs, four hits and three walks in five innings with five strikeouts. He had been seeking his 250th big league win. Continue reading →
