New York Yankees Made Good Call By Not Extending Russell Martin

Even though New York Yankess fans are divided on how much value Russell Martin provided to the squad, many statistics – particularly defensive metrics – will reveal that he was a strong performer in 2011.  The main purpose of this post isn’t to discuss Russell Martin’s defense in detail so I’m not going to burden you with complicated algorithms to determine how many runs he saved the New York Yankees with his framing ability.  There is also the fact that I don’t quite remember where they are.  Anyway, the main point that I want to make here is that the New York Yankees are better off having NOT signed Russell Martin to a long-term extension this offseason. Prior to Martin and the Yankees coming to an agreement on his one-year arbitration offer, the two parties had initial discussions regarding a three-year deal according to Daniel Barbarisi.  I am a fan of  Martin.  I like what I saw from his defense (although I’m far from a scout) – a… Continue reading

Lou Piniella hired by Yankees’ YES Network

Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella has been hired by the team’s YES Network as a special contributor. Piniella will help with 20-30 events this year, including some game telecasts. He also is with the team as a spring training instructor in Tampa, Fla., near his home. A member of the Yankees’ World Series-winning teams in 1977 and `78, Piniella managed them from 1986-87, was general manager in 1988, then returned to the dugout that year. He managed Cincinnati from 1990-92, winning the Series in his first year, then managed Seattle, Tampa Bay and the Chicago Cubs. He was an analyst on the team’s MSG Network’s broadcasts in 1989. Says Piniella: ”It’s a thrill for me to be involved with the New York Yankees again and going back to my roots.” Continue reading

Quote: Nova’s arm strain 100 percent healed

Joe Girardi left everyone wondering what was going on in game five of the ALDS last season when he pulled Ivan Nova after just two innings. After the game he revealed he had suffered an arm strain and had to be pulled from the game. I didn’t give it much thought at the time as it seemed like an easy excuse for Girardi who seemed like he was panicking at the time. Part of me still feels like this entire thing is BS. But for what it’s worth, Nova told an AP reporter that his arm has completely healed. “It’s perfect,” Nova said. “100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.” Nova has been throwing for weeks already so they don’t seem worried about him at all. Despite the fact that the Yankees have six guys fighting for five rotation spots, the general assumption is that Nova’s spot is secure. Nova has no lingering forearm issues

Ivan Nova’s arm feels fine, and he says there are no aftereffects of the injury that cut short his start in Game 5 of the AL division series as the New York Yankees were eliminated. After leading major league rookies in wins last season, Nova got the win in the rain-interrupted opener against Detroit. But he lost the series final, leaving after just two inning because of a strained flexor in his right forearm. Nova healed without complications, and the right-hander began throwing off a mound well before spring training. ”It’s perfect,” he said Wednesday. ”100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.” Nova was 16-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 27 starts and one relief appearance despite spending most of July in the minor leagues. ”I just want to be in the rotation and I want to win games.” he said. ”I don’t mind if I’m number one, two, three, four, five.” New York won his final 12 starts, and he became the Yankees’ No. 2 starter behind CC Sabathia. ”There’s a quiet confidence to him right now, and it’s good to see it,” Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. ”I thought that last year early, we scored some runs for him and I think it helped him get some wins and then he got some confidence from that. Then you saw him pitch the way that he’s capable of.” New York appears to have an abundance of starting pitchers, signing Hideki Kuroda and acquiring Michael Pineda from Seattle to join Sabathia, Nova, Phil Hughes and Freddy Garcia. ”We have six weeks to iron that out,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. ”The best-case scenario for us is that everyone’s throwing well and there are no injuries and there are no setbacks and you have to make a tough decision. I can tell you CC’s going to start opening day, and then we go from there and try and figure out how everyone else lines up and who our five starters are.” Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner is upbeat, citing the team’s pitching. New York’s bullpen includes career saves leader Mariano Rivera, and setup men David Robertson and Rafael Soriano. ”Our pitchers from top to bottom, the starters and the relievers, are deep and hopefully they’ll all have good years,” Steinbrenner said. ”Even if a couple have off years, we’ve got so much depth. But hopefully all will be good. ”Our hitting, as always, will be good or good enough. I’m pleased with what Brian (Cashman) was able to get done.” Steinbrenner expects tough competition in the AL East. ”We realize it. The Red Sox realize it. The Rays realize it. You never know what the Blue Jays or Orioles will do at any given time,” Steinbrenner said. ”The American League is very tough, and the American League East is the best division in baseball, period. It just is, top to bottom.” Notes: Girardi said he likes the proposed one-game wild-card playoff plan. ”I think it makes it very interesting,” he said. ”I think the excitement of that one-game playoff is good for baseball.” … RHP Joba Chamberlain (elbow ligament replacement surgery) threw 30 pitches in his latest session off a 5-inch half-mound and remains on target to throw off a full mound Tuesday. … Closer Mariano Rivera threw on 60 feet on level ground. No date has been announced for his first bullpen session. … Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella joined the YES Network as a special contributor. Continue reading

New York Yankees add Raul Ibanez and Eric Chavez

The Yankees wasted no time putting their new found A.J. Burnett savings to use. Two days ago, they agreed to make Raul Ibanez their DH for a paltry 1.1 million dollars. Yesterday, they retained Eric Chavez for 900 thousand. The two signings should close out the offseason for the Yankees as they got their much coveted left-handed DH option and veteran reserve outfielder. In some circles, the addition of Ibanez is a bit controversial given the other options on the table. Vladmir Guerrero, Johnny Damon, and Hideki Matsui are all still on the market. Most thought that Johnny Damon was destined to make a comeback. He is also left-handed and offered the Yankees more speed than Ibanez. Meanwhile, Guerrero is not far removed from putting up dominant numbers (2010) with the Texas Rangers. The key here was that the Yankees already have a solid option against lefties in Andruw Jones. So, why pay between three and five million dollars for a part-time player. Plus, the difference between their r… Continue reading

New York Yankees: Who likes criticizing Mo cause I do not

Image via Wikipedia Unfortunately it seems there’s always a first time for everything. Good or Bad. And criticizing New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera will be a first for me. FIRST, LET ME SAY HOW I FEEL ABOUT MO: Rivera is not only the greatest closer to ever play the game; he is the paramount of a role model for the way he handles himself both on and off the field. Baseball fans and players alike worship him, and you realize that this after hearing ex- Red Sox, now Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon once told MLB.com Ian Browne: “I owe a lot of gratitude to him because of what he’s done. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for him. I think everybody knows that. The closer’s role wouldn’t be as noted. More and more now, people and teams and fans are starting to realize, because of Mariano, how important it is to have that closer to win a World Series,” he went on to say, “When you look up closer, the definition, in the dictionar… Continue reading

Yankees sign Eric Chavez to 1-year, $900K deal

Joe Girardi was a little premature, but the Yankees did eventually sign backup infielder Eric Chavez to a one-year major league deal worth worth $900K today, according to Jon Heyman and Ken Rosenthal. Chavez is back to play the same role he served as last season, backup third baseman to Alex Rodriguez who might also see some time at first base and DH. Chavez is certainly a big risk. The former MVP candidate has not played in more than 90 games since 2006 and played just 58 last year after he missed about half the season with a foot injury. Not only did he barely play, but once he returned from the injury he lost most of his effectiveness. He had a .410 OBP and a .834 OPS in his first 17 games, but had a .294 OBP and a .633 OPS in his final 41 games. The Yankees are signing him in hopes that he can finally stay healthy and put up the numbers he posted in April last season over the long haul. The Yankees do have Bill Hall, whom they signed to a minor league deal, but this pretty m… Continue reading
