2013 MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees’ first baseman trade targets
Matt Adams – The Cardinals don’t really have a place to play Adams, with Allen Craig at first base, so they could choose to sell high on him and get something they might actually need. He clobbers right-handed pitching and would be under contract through 2019. Chris Carter – He is a fringe major leaguer who is having an average season for the Astros after a strong showing in 2012. He has an even platoon split and, at 26, is under team control through 2019. Tyler Colvin – He won’t be a free agent until 2017 and just got called up this season. He was an above-average hitter in 2012 (117 wRC+), but benefitted greatly from playing for the Rockies . He has the ability to play both first base and outfield, so he brings some flexibility. Michael Cuddyer – He has been an above-average player throughout his career, but he was given a ridiculous contract by the Rockies and would have $10.5 million due to him in 2014. He has hit lefties well (132 wRC+) throughout his career and can also play the outfield. Brad Hawpe – The Angels brought him back after he sat out the 2012 season. This would be a scrapheap deal to fill a roster spot and won’t improve anything, though he does have a 118 wRC+ against right-handers. Todd Helton – The Rockies’ longtime franchise player is coming to the end of his contract at the age of 40 and is probably having the worst season of his career. If they want to salary dump his $5 million contract, then the Yankees would have their full time first baseman for the rest of the season. Paul Konerko – The 37-year-old is in the last year of his contract with the White Sox and he could be heading for retirement. He’s had a pretty down year, but he has hit lefties well (124 wRC+) and could slide in as one half of a first base platoon. The biggest problem is that he has $12 million left on his contract, but if Chicago has a fire sale, he could be a decent pickup. Kendrys Morales – He is owed $5.2 million from the Mariners this season and is on his way to one of the best offensive seasons of his career. The switch hitter has had some trouble hitting right-handers this season, which he has hit well throughout his career, but is hitting left-handers very well (160 wRC+) instead. Justin Morneau – He has $14 million owed to him this year, but he’s been a league-average hitter against right-handers and struggled against lefties with the Twins . He does have a .458/.536/1.000 batting line in 56 plate appearances, so he could benefit from the short porch. Logan Morrison – He’s dealt with a few injuries, but when he’s healthy he is an above-average hitter. He could easily serve as the team’s right-fielder and first baseman and his non-existent platoon splits would allow him to serve as the DH against lefties. Morrison is only 22 25, under team control until 2017 and has soured in the eyes of the Marlins . He could really be a longterm helpful solution if he can regain his form. Michael Morse – He is owed $6.7 million this year and is absolutely destroying left-handed pitching this year (181 wRC+). Morse could benefit a move into the AL East where he would play a majority of his games in Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, and Fenway Park instead of Safeco Field with the Mariners . Carlos Pena – The $2.9 million Astros first baseman would be an easy candidate for a midseason trade. Historically, he has not hit lefties well, but his splits have reversed this year and he has a 126 wRC+ against them. Brett Pill – He would be a quick and easy pick up from the Giants as a Quadruple-A 28-year-old player. He’s under contract until 2019 and hasn’t had much chance at the MLB level, but don’t expect much. Mark Reynolds – The Cleveland Indians could become sellers at the deadline and try to trade off their $6 million corner infielder. He has a career 123 wRC+ against lefties and could play the corners, though he’s not a very good defensive third baseman Michael Young – He would essentially be a better Jayson Nix because he can play every positon in the infield while providing league-average offense. With a 117 wRC+ against left-handers, he could the first baseman against lefties and move around on the left side of the infield as needed. The Yankees would have to take on a portion of the Phillies ‘ $6 million, since the Rangers are still paying for $10 million of his 2013 season. Continue reading
First Pitch: Cano on display
A baseball official monitoring the potential Robinson Cano sweeptakes said he thought the Yankees’ biggest rivals for Cano, if he hits free agency, would not be the Dodgers, but the Phillies or the Cubs. The Phillies, who are in the midst of one of those gazillion dollar new TV deals, would have to decide if they wanted to turn to Cano and turn away from Chase Utley, while the Cubs could look to fast-forward their rebuilding process. The official thought that Cano would end up with $200 million over eight years. Continue reading
The Binder or Donnie Baseball?
Here is the start of my column. In late October of 2007, Hank Steinbrenner was the Baby Boss. Outside the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., a handful of New York reporters huddled in full stakeout mode, waiting each day for a few words from Hank on who would be the next manager. Don Mattingly was thought to be the favorite to replace Joe Torre. Earlier in the month, Torre and the Yankees finalized their divorce, opening up one of the biggest jobs in sports. Continue reading

Yanks grab a big win on getaway day
ANAHEIM — Nothing comes easy for the Yankees these days, not even when they take a six-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning with CC Sabathia still on the mound and David Robertson and Mariano Rivera fresh and rested in their bullpen. There was no way they could lose this game, and then suddenly, there sure as heck was as the Los Angeles Angels suddenly trailed by a single run and had the bases loaded with Albert Pujols at the plate. It was the kind of showdown baseball fans would pay to see any day of the week, Pujols vs. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Angels 6, Yankees 2
ANAHEIM — Just when you thought things could hardly get worse, a day of multiple losses for the Yankees. First, the game — a 6-2 defeat to the Angels. Yet another one in which the bats roused themselves for one inning, the third, then rolled over to resume the lumber slumber they’ve been in for past week or so. But worse than that, in the fourth inning, they also lost Mark Teixeira to a recurrence of the wrist injury that cost him the first two months of the season. Continue reading
Pregame notes: A-Rod runs, Hafner sits
ANAHEIM — The reinforcements may not be on their way quite yet, but Joe Girardi did have some encouraging news on one member of his Broken Brigade rehabbing down in Tampa. “Alex ran the bases today at 75 percent and felt pretty good,” the manager said. “I’m curious to see how he feels tomorrow or the next day, but that’s something that he hasn’t been doing, and that’s good.” In case you’ve forgotten, Alex’s last name is Rodriguez and he is expected back sometime after the All-Star break following hip surgery in January. First Pitch: The Young Pitching Story
Saturday’s starter David Phelps has solidified the No. 5 spot. In eight starts since May 1, Phelps, 26, is 3-2 with a 3.38 ERA in 45 1/3 innings. Adam Warren, 25, posted a 3.12 ERA in 34 2/3 innings as the long man. Preston Claiborne, 25, has walked just one batter and allowed only two earned runs in his first 21 innings in the bigs. Vidal Nuno, 25, had a 2.25 ERA in 20 innings, which included three solid starts. There is no Matt Harvey among them, but young, controllable pitching has emerged in 2013 and beyond. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Angels 5, Yankees 2
ANAHEIM — This Yankee season is turning into one long toothache, a dull throbbing pain that never seems to subside. First, the good news — they snapped their scoreless streak at 21 1/3 innings, one that began with the final 17 2/3 of Thursday’s loss to the Athletics. The bad news? They’re working on another one, 5 1/3 and counting. And with Andy Pettitte having an off night, they really had no shot in this one. What it means: That the Yankees have now lost four straight, five of their last seven. Continue reading
Notes: Neal and pray
ANAHEIM — In the aftermath of Thursday’s 18-inning 3-2 loss to the Oakland Atheltics, Joe Girardi mentioned there would probably be some roster moves today in order to deal with some of the fallout. A pitcher or two definitely, and a position player — probably an infielder — maybe. But no one expected the Yankees to call up an outfielder, a choice that seemed even more curious with the news that 3B Kevin Youkilis was headed back to the disabled list with lingering lower back problems.
