6 things to know about Yanks-MLS deal

I just got off a conference call with Yankees president Randy Levine, MLS commissioner Don Garber and Mancester City FC CEO Ferran Soriano. Here are the five things you need to know about the Yankees’ involvement as MLS owners. 1.) Will there be soccer games at Yankee Stadium? In the interim, it is possible, Levine said. The MLS team is to begin play in 2015 and will not have a new stadium built by then. Levine mentioned Citi Field as another possible site. Continue reading

Yankees to co-own soccer team

The New York Yankees are going into the soccer business. The Yankees are partnering with Manchester City to own Major League Soccer’s 20th team, an expansion franchise, which will be called New York City Football Club and plans to start play in the 2015 season. Manchester City, owned by Sheik Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, will be the majority owner of the team. While MLS has been negotiating with New York to build a stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, near the home of the New York Mets, NYC FC will start play at an interim home and will consider other sites for a stadium. First Pitch: Hal calls tickets ‘affordable’

Hal Steinbrenner spoke at Yankee Stadium on Saturday. He disagreed with the assessment that tickets are overpriced in the Bronx. This is different point of view than what I generally hear from fans. This is what Hal had to say about ticket prices being too high: “You hear about that in the media,” Steinbrenner said. “You don’t hear that there are thousands and thousands of affordable seats in the $25 range for every game, not to mention the specials that we do, that we used to do at the old stadium. Pettitte ‘not sure’ about next start

Andy Pettitte said he is pretty sure the tightness in his left trapezius that caused him to leave Thursday’s game with two out in the fifth inning was nothing more serious than a muscle spasm. But Pettitte said he is not at all sure that he will be able to make his next start, scheduled for Tuesday against the Orioles in Baltimore. “Obviously, I’m realistic,” he said after taking the loss in the New York Yankees’ 3-2 defeat at the hands of the Seattle Mariners. Pettitte pulled with tight trapezius muscle

New York Yankees left-hander Andy Pettitte left Thursday’s game against Seattle in the fifth inning with a tight left trapezius muscle. After Pettitte struck out Seattle’s Kyle Seager on a 77 mph slider for the second out in the fifth, Yankees manager Joe Girardi, pitching coach Larry Rothschild and trainer Mark Littlefield all visited him on the mound. After a brief meeting, Pettitte left the game after throwing just 79 pitches with the Yankees down 2-1. Continue reading

Injury Report: Hafner happy with BP session

Yankees manager Joe Girardi provided updates on the team’s injured stars before Thursday’s game against Seattle. Here’s the latest on the injured contingent. • Yankees designated hitter Travis Hafner’s batting practice session Thursday went well and Hafner’s hoping he will be back soon. Hafner (shoulder) has missed the team’s last three games and is not sure if he can be used as a pinch hitter Thursday. The veteran also did soft toss in the cage prior to the game. Continue reading
