Hughes battered in the Bronx, again
NEW YORK — Phil Hughes’ spot in the Yankees’ starting rotation may be in jeopardy. At least it should be. Hughes was rocked yet again at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, giving up five runs on 10 hits in six innings in the Yankees’ 6-0 loss to the Dodgers in the nightcap of a doubleheader. His record on the season dropped to 3-6, and his ERA rose to 5.09. Manager Joe Girardi was asked about Hughes’ job status after the game. “I haven’t really thought about moving Phil out of the rotation,” Girardi said. Continue reading

Rainout means Donnie Doubleheader
NEW YORK — The series opener between the Yankees and Dodgers has been rained out, meaning the two-game series will be played on one day, with a split doubleheader on Wednesday. Hiroki Kuroda will start the first game for the Yankees, at 1:05 p.m. Phil Hughes — the scheduled starter on Tuesday — will start the nightcap, at 7:05 p.m. Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Kuroda preferred to start the opener, and it is his day to pitch. Fans with paid tickets for Tuesday’s game can use them for the rescheduled game on Wednesday afternoon, or exchange them for any regular season game at Yankee Stadium in 2013 or 2014, subject to availability. W2W4: Dodgers at Yankees
Yasiel Puig will be a big challenge for the Yankees this series.A look at a few of the many statistical storylines for tonight’s matchup between the Dodgers and Yankees in the Bronx. The Dodgers finally come to New York This will be the Dodgers’ first regular-season game in New York after a pair of interleague series in Los Angeles, in which the teams split six games. Dodgers-Yankees Rivalry Moments Their most recent meeting was June 27, 2010, a game in which the Yankees rallied from four runs down in the ninth inning against Dodgers closer Jonathon Broxton, then won in the 10th inning on Robinson Cano’s two-run homer. The Binder or Donnie Baseball?
Here is the start of my column. In late October of 2007, Hank Steinbrenner was the Baby Boss. Outside the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., a handful of New York reporters huddled in full stakeout mode, waiting each day for a few words from Hank on who would be the next manager. Don Mattingly was thought to be the favorite to replace Joe Torre. Earlier in the month, Torre and the Yankees finalized their divorce, opening up one of the biggest jobs in sports. Continue reading

Pineda continues to look good
While the big news on Monday is Mark Teixeira likely going back on the DL and Brian Cashman taking a major dig at his hitting coach, Kevin Long, there were — as always — some injury updates as well. • Michael Pineda will pitch Thursday in a Florida State League game. Pineda has been throwing in the mid-to-low 90s and Cashman is thrilled with his rehab progress thus far. This will be Pineda’s third start, and he will throw about 80 pitches. Continue reading

Postgame notes: Pitchers as targets
ANAHEIM — Practically lost in the pleasant surprise of the New York Yankees bats suddenly reawakening for six runs Sunday, as well as the unsettling near-collapse of their two best relievers in the ninth inning, was the frightening sight of two pitchers being hit hard by batted balls late in the game. First, it was CC Sabathia getting nailed by a shot in the torso off the bat of Mike Trout in the sixth inning. And in the ninth, David Robertson took a liner from Mark Trumbo in the right thigh. Rapid Reaction: Angels 6, Yankees 2
ANAHEIM — Just when you thought things could hardly get worse, a day of multiple losses for the Yankees. First, the game — a 6-2 defeat to the Angels. Yet another one in which the bats roused themselves for one inning, the third, then rolled over to resume the lumber slumber they’ve been in for past week or so. But worse than that, in the fourth inning, they also lost Mark Teixeira to a recurrence of the wrist injury that cost him the first two months of the season. Continue reading
Pregame notes: A-Rod runs, Hafner sits
ANAHEIM — The reinforcements may not be on their way quite yet, but Joe Girardi did have some encouraging news on one member of his Broken Brigade rehabbing down in Tampa. “Alex ran the bases today at 75 percent and felt pretty good,” the manager said. “I’m curious to see how he feels tomorrow or the next day, but that’s something that he hasn’t been doing, and that’s good.” In case you’ve forgotten, Alex’s last name is Rodriguez and he is expected back sometime after the All-Star break following hip surgery in January.
