Report: Alex Rodriguez Has ‘No Plans’ to Retire, Focused on Rehabbing Hip

Alex Rodriguez is showing plenty of perseverance. Or maybe he just really likes money. Either way, we shouldn’t be so quick to write off A-Rod’s career. Rodriguez has “no plans” to retire from baseball, according to the New York Daily News. Rodriguez had hip surgery earlier this offseason and was already expected to miss a big chunk of 2013, but his future became even cloudier in the wake of a Miami New Times report that listed Rodriguez among the major leaguers linked to a PED-selling, anti-aging clinic in south Florida. There has been speculation since the PED report came out on Tuesday that Rodriguez may have played his last game. Apparently, that’s no longer thought to be a foregone conclusion, and a source reportedly told the New York Daily News that Rodriguez is focused on his current rehab. This really shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise considering Rodriguez has five years and $114 million remaining on his contract. Perhaps the idea of Rodriguez retiring was simply wish… Continue reading

Report: Alex Rodriguez Unlikely to Ever Play for Yankees Again, No Matter What Happens Regarding PED Allegations

Alex Rodriguez‘s status was already unclear because of the hip injury he’s battling, but a recent report linking the Yankees third baseman to performance-enhancing drugs has really clouded his future. Whatever Rodriguez’s future holds, though, it might not happen in the Bronx. According to the New York Daily News, Rodriguez is unlikely to ever play for the Yankees again, no matter what happens regarding the new PED allegations. Rodriguez, who still has a whopping five years and $114 million left on his contract, is recovering from hip surgery and was already expected to miss a good chunk of the 2013 season. Rodriguez is now back in the news after a report released by the Miami New Times on Tuesday listed the slugger as one of six MLB players in connection to a PED-selling, anti-aging clinic in south Florida. Many have speculated that the Yankees will look to void Rodriguez’s contract in the wake of the allegations, and perhaps it’s Rodriguez’s hip that will eventually rid New York o… Continue reading

Yankees sign Juan Rivera

The New York Yankees have reunited with outfielder Juan Rivera, a source tells ESPNNewYork.com’s Wallace Matthews. It is a minor league deal, allowing Rivera to compete with Matt Diaz and Russ Canzler to be a right-handed-hitting outfielder for the Yankees. With Ichiro Suzuki and Brett Gardner joining Curtis Granderson in the outfield, whomever wins the spot(s) figures to receive plenty of playing time. Ichiro, Gardner and Granderson are all lefties. Report: Rafael Soriano Agrees to Two-Year, $28 Million Contract With Nationals

It looked for a while like Rafael Soriano would regret opting out of his contract with the Yankees. That’s no longer the case, as the Nationals have reportedly decided to toss a lucrative deal his way. Soriano has agreed to a two-year, $28 million contract with the Nationals, according to Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan. The deal reportedly contains an option for a third year that will vest if Soriano finishes 120 games over the course of the next two seasons. Soriano took over as the Yankees’ closer last season after Mariano Rivera went down with a season-ending injury on May 3. He pitched well in his new role, saving 42 games and finishing the season with a 2.26 ERA in 69 appearances. It marked the second time in three seasons that Soriano recorded more than 40 saves, as he also accomplished the feat in 2010 as a member of the Rays. He saved 45 games with Tampa that year while earning an All-Star selection and finishing eighth in Cy Young voting and 12th in MVP voting. The 33-year-old … Continue reading

Kevin Youkilis: ‘We Need to Adjust the Society,’ Stop ‘Going Berserk Over a Sporting Event’

Kevin Youkilis received a standing 0vation when he returned to Fenway Park last season as a member of the Chicago White Sox. The next time he enters the friendly confines of Fenway, however, fans may not be so kind. Youkilis, the Yankee, is expecting some fans to boo. Any why wouldn’t they? Outside a few dozen expletive-laden phrases, “boo” is arguably the most popular word when it comes to the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry, no matter who you are. Youk, who was a guest on the Hill-Man Morning Show on Tuesday, spoke about joining the other side of the rivalry and used it as an opportunity to tough on some big-picture issues. “In this day and age we’re living right now, with all the things around this world, we’re booing and getting so worked up about sports. Why is it so crazy in sports?” he asked. “This [Sandy Hook] tragedy happens, we have all of this craziness. People are going berserk over a sporting event. It’s wild. It’s wild to me how people can react and act with so much hate in sp… Continue reading

Report: Troy Glaus, Cody Ransom Contacted Yankees About Third Base Vacancy Before Bombers Signed Kevin Youkilis

Kevin Youkilis will be the guy filling Alex Rodriguez‘s shoes in the Bronx this season, but before the Yankees inked the veteran infielder to a one-year deal, they were reportedly receiving a bunch of phone calls about the job opening. According to WFAN’s Sweeny Murti, the Yankees received plenty of inquiries from players and agents who felt they could help fill the void left by Rodriguez, who is expected to miss 4-6 months after undergoing hip surgery. Troy Glaus and Cody Ransom reportedly were among those to call. Glaus last played in the big leagues as a member of the Braves in 2010. He played primarily first base that season, although he does have experience down at the hot corner. The 36-year-old hit .240 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs in 128 games with Atlanta, but he’s shown plenty of power over the course of his 13-year career. A four-time All-Star, Glaus hit a career-high 47 home runs as a member of the Angels in 2000, and has 320 in total. Ransom, who turns 37 in February, … Continue reading

Could Cano leave the Yankees?

After years of spending top dollar on top tier free agents, the New York Yankees want to cut their payroll in 2014 and that might cost them Robinson Cano. The 30-year-old second baseman is set to become a free agent after the 2013 season and is looking to sign a contract similar to that of Alex Rodriguez‘s current deal with the Yankees. While Cano is in the prime of his career and arguably the best player on the New York roster, he may very well end up on a different team in 2014. The New York Daily News reported that numerous sources predict that Cano will play somewhere other than New York after next season. “I don’t think he’ll be with the Yankees beyond next season,” one of the sources told the Daily News. “He’s not giving them a hometown discount, and they seem to be more interested in keeping their payroll down than winning.” Cano is represented by Scott Boras and the agent is very well aware of the way the Yankees do business. “I think the Yankee policy is very clear, that th… Continue reading

New York Post Calls Derek Jeter ‘Derek Eater,’ With Shortstop Looking a Little Soft During Rehab (Photo)

The 2013 baseball is still months away, and Derek Jeter is still in the middle of rehab from the broken ankle he suffered in this year’s playoff. So that means he still has plenty of time to return to peak physical shape for his return, whenever that may be. As anyone who’s had surgery on a toe, foot, leg or knee can tell you, being taken off of your feet for an extended period of time means you might end up putting on a few pounds. It looks like not even Jeter is immune to that. The Yankees shortstop made the back page of the New York Post on Friday morning, and he was looking a little soft around the midsection, as a photo of him was snapped while he was walking around in his cast/walking boot. “Rehabbing Jeter takes fork in the road to recovery,” the Post added with its caption. See the photo below. Photo via Twitter/@jasoncollette Continue reading

Report: Andy Pettitte Finalizing One-Year Agreement With Yankees Worth About $11 Million

Andy Pettitte‘s baseball itch apparently wasn’t scratched. After sitting out the 2011 season, Pettitte returned to the Yankees to make 12 starts in 2012. Now, it looks like he’s on the verge of returning for an 18th big league season. According to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman, Pettitte is finalizing a one-year agreement with the Yankees worth about $11 million. The deal reportedly could be announced within the next few days, and it might not be the only move for the Bronx Bombers to announce. Heyman reports that New York is also optimistic it will have a deal with long-time closer Mariano Rivera by the week’s end. Pettitte went 5-4 with a 2.87 ERA last season in a campaign that was shortened due to a midseason ankle injury. The 40-year-old boasts a very impressive postseason resume, however, having won a major league record 19 playoff games. The lefty is 19-11 with a 3.81 ERA in 44 postseason starts. Rivera missed most of the 2012 season after injuring his knee while shagging flyballs… Continue reading
