Derek Jeter’s amazing Lego portrait
You may have seen a couple of days ago the matchstick made Yankee Stadium. That took years to build and is pretty amazing, especially as to how detailed it was. Well, we have already seen something that comes pretty close to topping it. A Derek Jeter portrait that is simply amazing, as it is made entirely out of Legos. The New York Yankees shortstop has never looked as clutch as this: This portrait, along with others of Major League Baseball players, are a creation of Sean Kenney. These are now on display at the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory. You can find Jay Bruce and Buster Posey alongside the Captain: But the portraits are the only Legos creations to be seen at the exhibit, as you will also see a beautiful replica of the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field: Probably even more impressive is this one of Miller Park: Still starting at Derek, aren’t you? Yankees call up INF David Adams, cut Chris Nelson
The New York Yankees have selected the contract of infielder David Adams from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and they designated third baseman Chris Nelson for assignment two weeks after acquiring him. Adams was set to make his major league debut on his 26th birthday, starting at third base and batting sixth against Seattle on Wednesday night. Manager Joe Girardi says the 2008 third-round pick has been held back by injuries, including one that helped quash a trade with Seattle for ace Cliff Lee in 2010. The Yankees would have liked to call up Adams last month but they couldn’t because Adams was cut then re-signed during spring training. By rule, New York had to wait until May 15. Nelson was designated for assignment on April 28 by Colorado and acquired by the Yankees on May 1. He was 8 for 36 (.222) with two RBIs. Continue reading →

Teixeira expects to be with Yankees by June
credit: getty images The New York Yankees have been riddled with injuries since the start of the season but slowly players are returning to the field. Curtis Granderson returned to the lineup recently and Mark Teixiera should be back with the team shortly. Teixiera told MLB.com writer Brian Hoch that he expects to be back with the team by June 1. Previously Teixiera has set a return goal of May 1 as he worked his way back from a wrist injury but things had not progressed as the first basemen had hoped. If Teixiera plans to be back with the Yankees by the start of June then a rehab assignment should probably begin in the next week. Teixiera appeared in 124 games last season compiling a .251/.332/.475 line with 24 home runs and 84 RBI. Continue reading →

David Adams officially promoted
The New York Yankees have found their new third baseman. David Adams, who turns 26 today, has officially been promoted from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre according to a tweet by the Trentonian’s Josh Norris. Adams has produced a .316/.407/.490 batting line, and hit three home runs in 27 games with the RailRiders this season. Adams had been released earlier this offseason, losing his 40-man roster spot to make room for Vernon Wells. He was re-signed three days later to a minor-league deal, which prohibited him from being promoted until May 15. Though no corresponding move has been announced, multiple sources have told me they expect infielder Chris Nelson to be designated for assignment. Continue reading →

Yankees’ Travis Hafner to get MRI on shoulder
The New York Yankees got back a powerful hitter when outfielder Curtis Granderson returned to their lineup on May 14. The Yankees had awaited Granderson’s season debut since early in Spring Training. However, there is now concern over the possibility of losing another big left-handed bat for some time. MLB.com’s Spencer Fordin reports that Yankees’ designated hitter Travis Hafner sat out of his team’s May 14 game against the Seattle Mariners due to recurring soreness in his right shoulder. Hafner played through the pain for a while, but manager Joe Girardi says that an MRI looks inevitable. Said Girardi, “We’re going to try to get him a couple days. He’s going to get a test, and we’re going to see where he’s at…. We’re just taking some cautionary [steps] to see where he’s at and to make sure that we’re not missing anything.” Hafner has given the Yankees the left-handed punch that they had hoped after Raul Ibanez … Continue reading →

Granderson returns to Yankees lineup
Outfielder Curtis Granderson became the first of the New York Yankees’ injured stars to return to the lineup, rejoining the team 2 1/2 months after breaking his right forearm in his first at-bat of spring training. Granderson was activated from the disabled list and set to play left field and bat cleanup Tuesday night against Seattle. Not the easiest day for him to come back, either: Ace Felix Hernandez started for the Mariners. ”I’m ready to play,” Granderson said. ”I’m as ready as I can be.” Granderson took no more chances with future fractures, planning to wear an elbow guard and extra protection on the top of his hand. ”I’m padded up pretty well,” he said. Still sidelined are shortstop Derek Jeter, first baseman Mark Teixeira and third baseman Alex Rodriguez. The All-Stars haven’t played this season and while Teixeira could be back within a month, Jeter and A-Rod are likely out until the second half. Infielders Kevin Youkilis Continue reading →

Travis Hafner to undergo MRI on right shoulder
credit: getty images Travis Hafner has had some soreness in his right shoulder lately and the Yankees DH is going to attempt to get some answers. Hafner will sit out a few games and undergo an MRI. Hafner has had a long list of injuries during his career so the Yankees will not push the 35-year-old too hard this early in the season. The return of Curtis Granderson will allow the Yankees to rotate players into the DH role. Granderson’s return should more then make up for Hafner’s absence. Hafner has a .260/.383/.510 line with 6 home runs and 18 RBI in 115 plate appearances this season. Continue reading →

Yankees game 39 lineup: 5/14/13
Welcome back, Curtis Granderson! The All-Star slugger returns to the lineup after missing the first month and a half of the regular season with a broken forearm – he will hit cleanup and play left field; pitcher Vidal Nuno was sent down to clear a roster spot. There is another homecoming at the Stadium tonight, as Raul Ibanez returns to the place where he put himself in Yankee lore forever with some unforgettable home runs in last year’s postseason. As if all that wasn’t exciting enough, CC Sabathia will face off against King Felix Hernandez in one of the better pitching match-ups you’ll see all year. Tonight is definitely must watch! Here are your lineups: Seattle Mariners (18-20) managed by Eric Wedge Michael Saunders CF Jason Bay LF Kyle Seager 3B Kendrys Morales 1B Michael Morse RF Kelly Shoppach C Raul Ibanez DH Robert Andino 2B Brendan Ryan SS RHP Felix Hernandez (5-2, 1.53 ERA) New York Yankees (24-14) Brett Gardner CF Robinson Cano 2B Vernon Wells DH Curtis Granderson LF Lyle Overbay 1B Jayson Continue reading →

Today, the Grandy Man lands. Which will it be? The one who can take a rainbow, wrap it in a sigh, soak it in the sun and make a groovy lemon pie? Or…
Today, something will happen I never again expected to see:Curtis Granderson will rejoin the Yankees. I thought we’d trade him. Frankly, I hoped we would. Not that he’s a villain. Grandy remains a solid world citizen – a good-deed-doer and role model to all. He plays fine defense and hits many HRs. It’s just my lingering memory — Curtis, trudging to the dugout, bat in hands, puckering his mouth, staring at the grass, glancing back once, pulling off the helmet, plopping onto the bench – another hapless moment as the season crashes around our ribs.Last October, the whole team collapsed. But for me, the Grandy Man stung the worst. His mere presence against Detroit reminded us of what may become Brian Cashman’s worst career trade – Ian Kennedy to Arizona, and Austin Jackson & Phil Coke to Detroit – three solid players, while the Grandyman marches to the dugout, fuming and clueless. Last season, the Grandy Man struck out 195 times. He stole 10 bases, his lowest total… Continue reading →
