Yankees’ Mark Teixeira takes first at-bats since injury
Mark Teixeira first announced the fact that he had taken some good at-bats via his Twitter account yesterday. The team then confirmed his progress and prognosis. They are still guarded about his potential return date, but for Teixeira to take some swings for the first time since his wrist injury is a good thing. Felt good to get my first AB’s since March. 1-2 with a double and a walk, I’ll take it. #Yankees in first place, I’ll take that too! — Mark Teixeira (@teixeiramark25) May 20, 2013 Bryan Hoch of MLB.com says manager Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman are still cautious about Teixeira’s progress. Cashman acknowledges that a lot can still go wrong, and the team must take it day by day with Teixeira. Girardi said Teixeira will continue to hit in simulated games so he can get a feel for hitting from both sides of the plate. Teixeira suffered a wrist injury while preparing to play for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic this spring. He has yet t… Continue reading →

The Yankees are about to become the most ungrateful team in sports, and I am now dreading the return of the superstar lineup
Damn. I feel like the cad who falls for his best friend’s fiance, while the guy is off at the Star Fleet Academy. I keep telling myself, “No, this is NOT happening! I’ll break it off! I’m am not falling for Brian’s girl!” Then the girl – her name is Lyle – homers in the seventh, and you can’t take your eyes off her, and later, you’re together in the back of team bus, and you’re tearing the buttons from her jersey and-OK, you get my point, right? I’m in love with Lyle Overbay! There! I’ve said it! The forbidden truth! We want to get married! We want to adopt! But his boyfriend’s back, and there’s gonna be trouble, hey-na, hey-na… Listen: It’s weird, rooting for this Yankee team. It’s unlike anything we have seen since 1994. It’s like 1983, the crash year, except we’re winning. Last night, Lyle, Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells stole another victory with the kind of clutch hitting that, frankly, our big stars failed… Continue reading →

Yankees Game 44: Hafner & Wells Clip the Birds
The Assassin (Photo: Wiki Commons) New York Yankees 6–Baltimore Orioles 4 Where would we be without Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells? Once again, it was the two off-season acquisitions who came up with the big hits, powering the Yanks to their 12th come-from-behind victory of the season. Down 4-3 in the 9th, Hafner blasted a game-tying, opposite-field shot to left field, providing fodder for yet another Yankee-themed nightmare for Baltimore’s closer, Josh Johnson. After a scoreless 9th inning from David Robertson, Wells plated Ichiro Suzuki on a ground-rule double to left to give the Bombers a 5-4 edge in the 10th. Later in the inning Hafner drove in Wells on a single to right field to provide the final margin. The Bombers got on the board in the opening frame against former Yankee Freddy Garcia when Robinson Cano sent his 13th home run of the season 390 feet into the left field stands. An inning later David Adams had a solo act of his own, sending his first Major League home run down the left field line to Continue reading →

MLB Fan Cave Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano spent some time on the streets of New York City with a 13-year old Yankees fan who is battling leukemia. Really cool gesture. Continue reading →

Is Yankee GM Brian Cashman Underrated?
As baseball squeezes the Yankees with their newest socialist taxes and caps, Brian Cashman works with more and more restrictions. Hampered by decisions from ownership (namely the infamous Alex Rodriguez contract) he has been tasked with cutting payroll to $189 by 2014, while meeting the always unrealistic expectations of the best fans in baseball, Cashman has excelled. Last year it was Raul Ibanez, this year it has been Lyle Overbay, Travis Hafner, and Vernon Wells (each of which had key RBIs in the Yankees Monday comeback win over the Orioles). PATRICK SEMANSKY/AP The Yankees knew they would be in for a challenge as they work to overcome a plethora of injuries that include their highest-paid player, Alex Rodriguez, their team captain, Derek Jeter, Mark Teixeira, Curtis Granderson, and more recently Eduardo Nunez, Francisco Cervelli, and Andy Pettitte. The Yankees currently lead the AL East and stand to improve as Granderson has just returned from injury, Teixeira is due back in about two weeks, and plen Continue reading →

Yankees’ Mark Teixeira appears in exhibition game
New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira recently appeared in his first game since March, going 1-for-2 during an extended spring training contest. While the veteran is feeling good about his recovery, general manager Brian Cashman told reporters — including Ken Davidoff of The New York Post — that Teixeira isn’t out of the woods yet. “Until (Teixeira) is actually rehabbing in games…we’ll hold our breath for a while, and then he’ll go through spring training. If that goes fine, then I’ll believe at we’re OK. But prior to that, I’m not gonna count my chickens yet.” Teixeira has been sidelined due to a wrist injury he suffered early in spring training. He’s worked his way back to the point that he’s once again swinging in competitive situations, but Cashman won’t feel more confident in Teixeira’s recovery until the wrist holds up during a minor league rehab stint. While Cashman notes that it’s “worth som… Continue reading →

Teixeira plays in first extended spring game
Mark Teixeira is starting to inch towards a return, as he is finally playing in extended spring training games. Teixeira went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk, according to his twitter feed. Teix is aiming to be activated on May 31st, however the Yankees may take things slow which could push back his return to early June. Manager Joe Girardi has said that Teix’s rehab assignment will take longer than Curtis Granderson’s, who only appeared in a handful of minor league games. Lyle Overbay, who is hitting .259 with six homers and 24 RBIs, could possibly be the odd-man out when Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis eventually return. Felt good to get my first AB’s since March. 1-2 with a double and a walk, I’ll take it. #Yankees in first place, I’ll take that too! — Mark Teixeira (@teixeiramark25) May 20, 2013 Continue reading →

Robinson Cano Surprises 13-Year-Old Fan Battling Leukemia
Robinson Cano has propelled the vastly depleted New York Yankees to the American League East leader. His fast start will help him in his negotiations when he becomes the most coveted free agent next year, but Cano wants to display that he is a franchise player that can also be a huge contributor off the field. Nick D’Annibale is a 13-year-old fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) so the MLB Fan Cave thought it would be a great idea for him to stop by and play some street baseball. During their game an ice cream truck interrupts play, but what happens next is much better than any Choco Taco. Out of the ice cream truck pops Cano, who is Nick’s favorite player. Nick not only gets to play baseball with the best second baseman, but also shares some ice cream. This is definitely the sweetest story. Article found on: Next Impulse Sports Continue reading →

What to Reid into the Yanks newest addition.
Yesterday the Yankees acquired versatile infielder Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies for cash. Yes, the Yankees have an obvious lack on infield depth with Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Mark Texiera and Kevin Youkilis currently calling the disabled list their primary position. Brignac is a career .228 hitter with a .294 OBP. In his six year career, he’s only amassed 769 career big league at-bats with the majority of those coming in 2010 and 2011 in which he had 590 abs in those combined years. To this point, with mostly limited playing time, Brignac’s performance has been underwhelming. However, his numbers compare to that of a current Yankee. Another Yankee player has a career batting average of .215 and a OBP of .288. This Yankee’s best years were back in 2009 and 2010. He also is a versatile infielder. Can you guess who he is? The answer is Jayson Nix. If Brignac could provide the same production Nix has, he may very well be valuable to the bombers until the team can return to full strength. Hope Continue reading →
