The Yankees and the Ewing Theory
Are the 2013 Yankees an example of the Ewing Theory, made famous by Bill Simmons? The theory, devised by Simmons’ friend Dave Cirilli, has two elements: 1. A star athlete receives an inordinate amount of media attention and fan interest, yet his teams never win anything substantial with him (other than maybe some early-round playoff series). 2. That same athlete leaves his team — either by injury, trade, graduation, free agency or retirement — and both the media and fans immediately write off the team for the following season. Montero sent down by M’s
The Michael Pineda trade is improving. Slightly. Jesus Montero, who is batting .208, has struggled to the point he is being sent down by the Seattle Mariners. From the Herald Tribune: Catcher Jesus Montero will be sent to Triple-A Tacoma, while catcher Jesus Sucre will be selected from the Rainiers. Double-A back-up catcher Brandon Bantz, who was serving as the starter in Jackson after John Hicks suffered a groin injury and went on the DL, is already headed to Tacoma to serve as Mike Zunino’s backup. Rapid Reaction: Orioles 6, Yankees 3
WHAT IT MEANS: The Yankees lose two of three to the Orioles, but, more importantly, Hiroki Kuroda had to leave the game with an injury. The initial report is a bruised calf. NOW WHAT: The Yankees have suffered an incredible amount of injuries and have overcome every single one of them. Their pitching has led them throughout their hot start, beginning with Kuroda, who has been an ace. If he joins Andy Pettitte and Ivan Nova on the disabled list, the Yankees will have a challenge in trying to continue their torrid pace. Continue reading

Pregame Notes: Outfield rotation to end
BALTIMORE — In Wednesday’s lineup, Joe Girardi went with Ichiro Suzuki in right and shifted Curtis Granderson to center. The reason? Ichiro is a .500 hitter in 14 at-bats against Jason Hammel. Ichiro Suzuki#31 RFNew York Yankees2013 STATS GM40 HR2 RBI8 R15 OBP.280 AVG.241″He has good numbers against Hammel,” Girardi said. “Like I said, I’m going to move it around a little bit and let it iron itself out. This way, Gardy gets a couple of days. Continue reading

Rapid Reaction: Orioles 3, Yankees 2 (10)
WHAT IT MEANS: Phil Hughes bounced back, but the Vidal Nuno magic ended, at least for one night. BUCK-LE UP: The third pitch Nuno threw to Nate McLouth, McLouth drilled for the game-winning homer. It was remnants of the 2012 magic for Buck Showalter’s team. THAT WAS BETTER: After going just two-thirds of an inning his last time out, Hughes went six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, including two solo homers. He struck out five and walked two. 6 things to know about Yanks-MLS deal
I just got off a conference call with Yankees president Randy Levine, MLS commissioner Don Garber and Mancester City FC CEO Ferran Soriano. Here are the five things you need to know about the Yankees’ involvement as MLS owners. 1.) Will there be soccer games at Yankee Stadium? In the interim, it is possible, Levine said. The MLS team is to begin play in 2015 and will not have a new stadium built by then. Levine mentioned Citi Field as another possible site. Continue reading

Yankees to co-own soccer team
The New York Yankees are going into the soccer business. The Yankees are partnering with Manchester City to own Major League Soccer’s 20th team, an expansion franchise, which will be called New York City Football Club and plans to start play in the 2015 season. Manchester City, owned by Sheik Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, will be the majority owner of the team. While MLS has been negotiating with New York to build a stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, near the home of the New York Mets, NYC FC will start play at an interim home and will consider other sites for a stadium. First Pitch: Hughes hoping to sleep better
BALTIMORE — After lasting just two outs against Seattle last week, Phil Hughes has sat in bed a lot trying to figure out what happened. It was the worst start of his career, so it was tough just to push it out of his mind and fall asleep at night. The 12-2 loss ended with a shortstop, Alberto Gonzalez, pitching and an outfielder, Vernon Wells, playing second. Hughes put the Yankees in that position, which was embarrassing for him. “It is tough, anyway you slice it,” Hughes said. Continue reading
