Updated on Tex, Youk, and Tonight’s Game

Here’s an update on both injured Yankees via Bryan Hoch:The Yankees placed first baseman Mark Teixeira on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with inflammation in his right wrist, and are hopeful that the minimum 15 days will be enough for Teixeira to calm his wrist down. He said that it affects him most when hitting left-handed, and that allowing it time to heal should help him regain his mechanics. New York recalled outfielder Zoilo Almonte and right-hander Adam Warren from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in corresponding moves, while designating right-hander Chris Bootcheck for assignment. Additionally, the Yankees received an unfortunate report from Kevin Youkilis’ doctor visit in California. Dr. Robert Watkins will perform surgery on Thursday to repair a herniated disc in Youkilis’ back; he is expected to miss 10-12 weeks, according to general manager Brian Cashman.Just awful news on both counts. This season is getting ugly fast. Speaking of ugly, this weather blows a… Continue reading

Youkilis back to the DL

Kevin Youkilis has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery to repair it on Thursday. He is expected to need about 10-12 weeks of rest and rehab, which puts the rest of his season in jeopardy. Youkilis was batting .219/.305/.343 with two home runs and eight RBIs in 28 games as A-Rod’s fill in. It’s another blow to the Yankees as Mark Teixeira was placed back on the 15 day DL this week due to an inflamed right wrist. David Adams, Jayson Nix and Reid Brignac are the likely candidates to fill in at third. Continue reading

Yankees’ Mark Teixeira: Another DL stint possible

It is starting to look more likely that New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will will find himself on the disabled list once again. MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports that Teixeira took a cortisone shot on Monday, June 16, and the shot alone will keep him out of the lineup for at least seven days. Teixeira left last Saturday’s game because he had trouble swinging the bat. He flew back to New York on Sunday, and an MRI revealed inflammation in the same wrist that sidelined him for the season’s first two months. At that point, neither he nor the Yankees knew whether or not he would need another DL stint. Now, Hoch has learned that the disabled list is more likely. Mark Teixeira could return to Yankees’ disabled list http://t.co/k6Xl71Cv2Q — Bryan Hoch (@BryanHoch) June 17, 2013 Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has not yet made a final decision, but he is leaning toward the disabled list. Cashman explained that after the cortisone wears off in seven … Continue reading

Shocker: Kevin Youkilis is on DL and Brian Cashman is all aflutter

I had to laugh to keep from cringing when my Red Sox friend Johnny pointed out to me Brian Cashman’s latest pontificating on the state of the Yankees. Specifically, my friend cited Cashman telling the media yesterday this shocking news about Kevin Youkilis: that “back issues usually don’t get better.” Gee, you think? Next thing you know, Cash will figure out that jumping out of an airplane could possibly result in injury! It’s amazing — when the Yankees got off to a good start this year, Cashman got all the credit. Now that they’re struggling, it’s all apparently issues beyond Fredo’s control.  You know, bad luck like a guy who has been chronically injured for the last five years, missing significant time on the DL every single year, having his back bother him again, and feel even worse after he played every inning in the Yankees 18-inning game last week. Shocking, I’ll tell you. Shocking. When it comes to Youkilis, let me use Hollywood writer Nikki… Continue reading

Yankees’ Michael Pineda progressing on rehab assignment

New York Yankees’ pitcher Michael Pineda continues to make strides on his rehab assignment and will make his next Minor League start on Thursday for Class A Advanced Tampa. As reported by Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, “Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said that the 24-year-old is expected to throw about 80 pitches in the outing against the Blue Jays’ Florida State League affiliate, and Pineda’s reports have been positive coming off right labrum surgery.” Cashman states that reports have been very good on Pineda’s velocity and it’s possible that he could make his Yankees debut in July. Pineda did not pitch in the Major Leagues in 2012. In 2011, he was 9-10 with a 3.74 earned run average as a rookie with the Seattle Mariners.  He struck out 173 and allowed only 133 hits in 171 innings pitched. Continue reading

Yankees GM may put Teixeira on DL

Slumping Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira could be sidelined a while longer because of his ailing right wrist. “I haven’t done anything, but I’m leaning toward the disabled list,” New York general manager Brian Cashman said Monday on a conference call. Teixeira missed the first 53 games of the season because of a wrist injury. The All-Star slugger is hitting just .151 with three home runs and 12 RBIs in 53 at-bats. The 33-year-old Teixeira left the team during its recent West Coast trip, returned to New York and got a cortisone shot Sunday. Cashman said Teixeira probably wouldn’t be able to play for at least a week. Teixeira and the Yankees talked before the season about surgery, but decided against it. Cashman said he had “no regrets” about trying to heal the injury without an operation. “Is it something that’s going to force him to have surgery? I can’t rule any of that out,” Cashman said. Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long recently said the switch-hi Continue reading

Yankees avoid sweep, snap five-game losing streak

The New York Yankees avoided being swept for the second time in the last week with a win over the Los Angeles Angels in the third and final game of their weekend series on Sunday. Yankees’s closer Mariano Rivera struck out high-priced slugger, Albert Pujols, with the bases loaded and shut down the Angels five-run, ninth- inning rally, earning  Continue reading

Angels’ late rally comes up short vs. Rivera, Yanks

ANAHEIM, CA New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera began his Hall of Fame career in 1995 against the California Angels at Anaheim Stadium. He picked up the first of his 632 career saves 51 weeks later against the Angels at the same ballpark. And if Rivera goes through with plans to retire after this season, one of his most dramatic saves ever came yep, against the Angels at Angels Stadium. The Yankees entered the bottom of the ninth inning on Sunday with a 6-0 lead, cruising behind the left arm of CC Sabathia (7-5). However, Sabathia couldnt get an out and was replaced by David Robertson. Robertson could only get one out, and was relieved by the man many consider the greatest relief pitcher of all time. Rivera made it interesting before wrapping up the Bombers’ 6-5 win, which ended their five-game losing skid and the Angels three-game winning streak. And the final showdown was one for the ages. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth and the bases loaded for the Halos, up stepped arguably the greate Continue reading

Flying with the Blue Jays in Toronto, the New York Yankees will regret not promoting Chien-Ming Wang

Fanning five and only allowing five hits over seven scoreless innings, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Chien-Ming Wang stifled Rangers batters on Sunday in Arlington, Texas. After opting out of Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the 33-year-old Wang (1-0, 3.14 ERA) signed a one-year contract worth $500,000 last week to become a Blue Jay. Impressing with the New York Yankees affiliate before bailing for “The City within a Park,” Wang adds depth to an underachieving rotation featuring R.A. Dickey, Mark Buehrle and Josh Johnson. Expected to compete for their first World Series title since 1993, the Blue Jays (32-36) have crashed and sit in … Continue reading → Continue reading
