Lou Piniella hired by Yankees’ YES Network

Former Yankees manager Lou Piniella has been hired by the team’s YES Network as a special contributor. Piniella will help with 20-30 events this year, including some game telecasts. He also is with the team as a spring training instructor in Tampa, Fla., near his home. A member of the Yankees’ World Series-winning teams in 1977 and `78, Piniella managed them from 1986-87, was general manager in 1988, then returned to the dugout that year. He managed Cincinnati from 1990-92, winning the Series in his first year, then managed Seattle, Tampa Bay and the Chicago Cubs. He was an analyst on the team’s MSG Network’s broadcasts in 1989. Says Piniella: ”It’s a thrill for me to be involved with the New York Yankees again and going back to my roots.” Continue reading

Quote: Nova’s arm strain 100 percent healed

Joe Girardi left everyone wondering what was going on in game five of the ALDS last season when he pulled Ivan Nova after just two innings. After the game he revealed he had suffered an arm strain and had to be pulled from the game. I didn’t give it much thought at the time as it seemed like an easy excuse for Girardi who seemed like he was panicking at the time. Part of me still feels like this entire thing is BS. But for what it’s worth, Nova told an AP reporter that his arm has completely healed. “It’s perfect,” Nova said. “100 percent. I was worried a little bit, but they said you’re going to be fine.” Nova has been throwing for weeks already so they don’t seem worried about him at all. Despite the fact that the Yankees have six guys fighting for five rotation spots, the general assumption is that Nova’s spot is secure. Ibanez joins Yankees as platoon DH

The New York Yankees found their left-handed designated hitter on Monday, agreeing with free-agent Raul Ibanez on a one-year, $1.1 million contract, according to a major league source. Ibanez, who turns 40 on June 2, can earn a maximum of $4 million if he reaches all of his plate-appearance incentives, the source said. The Yankees chose Ibanez for the role over free agent Johnny Damon and others. Ibanez will serve as the team’s primary DH against right-handed pitching and also as a reserve outfielder. Ibanez finished with a .289 on-base percentage last season, his lowest in any full season, and a .419 slugging percentage, his lowest since 2000. Two awful slumps — an 0-for-35 and a 5-for-44 — contributed mightily to his disappointing numbers with the Philadelphia Phillies. Still, Ibanez finished with 31 doubles, 20 home runs and 84 RBI. It was his 10th straight season of 30 or more doubles. He has reached 20 homers in six of his last seven seasons and 80 RBI in nine of his last 10. Ibanez said recently that a recent session with Chicago Cubs hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo could help him to return to form. “I know 2012 is going to be way better than 2011,” Ibanez said. “I didn’t know quite how I was going to do it. But I knew I was going to do it. “Now I expect that (2012) is going to be great. That’s the different level I went to. I haven’t felt this good since I left for spring training in ’09 – the last time I worked with Rudy.” Ibanez was a teammate of Alex Rodriguez’s in both the minors and majors with the Seattle Mariners and became close with Yankees hitting coach Kevin Long when the two were together in the Royals’ organization. A-Rod 100 percent headed to spring training

Since re-signing on a 10-year deal four years ago, Alex Rodriguez has been nagged by various injuries, limiting him to just 124 games a year on average during that span. This spring training he is expected to show up “ready to go full speed,” David Waldstein of the NY Times reports. This is quite significant as A-Rod is coming off of an experimental knee surgery that he had this offseason. The Yankees still haven’t signed Eric Chavez to back him up and there are conflicting reports of whether or not they even have the money budgeted for him. Regardless of whether they sign Chavez or not, the Yankees will still need to rely on A-Rod this season as he is expected to hit cleanup and be a big part of this offsense. It’s a good sign if he’s healthy now even if it might be unrealistic to think he’ll make it through the entire season unscathed. OTHER INJURY NOTES: Andruw Jones had minor knee surgery in the offseason, but Brian Cashman seemed unconcern… Continue reading

Quote: Yankees won’t rush Joba back

Joba Chamberlain is on the rehab trail from Tommy John Surgery and has been tweeting a lot of positive updates as he goes through all of the steps. Listening to him and it sounds like he expects to be be back in April or May. However, Brian Cashman told Andrew Marchand of ESPNNewYork.com that they will not rush him back too quickly. “For all of our sakes, we just have to be careful for him and for us,” Cashman said. “It was a huge loss when we lost him last year and it will be a huge gain when we get him this year. We just have to make sure that when we get him back, he is here to stay.” “If you want to have a scale from 1-to-10 with 10 being the best with someone fully committed to doing the rehab and not cutting any corners and doing everything done that he needs to do, he checked off at the highest level of that scale,” Cashman said. “That still doesn’t erase the typical time-frame of this surgery.” Besides just being care… Continue reading

Done deal: Yankees trade Burnett to Pirates

APNewsNow. With AP Photos. By MIKE FITZPATRICK AP Sports Writer A.J. Burnett’s rocky tenure in pinstripes is over. The Yankees and Pirates have completed a trade Sunday that sends the much-maligned pitcher to Pittsburgh for a pair of minor leaguers. New York will also give the Pirates cash to cover part of Burnett’s hefty salary. The teams agreed to the deal Friday, but it was subject to Burnett passing a physical. He was at Pirates camp Sunday in Bradenton, Fla., to take his exam. Commissioner Bud Selig also had to approve the deal because of the money involved. Pittsburgh will pay $13 million of the $33 million salary due Burnett for 2012 and 2013, a person familiar with the negotiations said Friday, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made at that time. — AP Sports Writer Ronald Blum contributed to this report. Sabathia lost weight in offseason

CC Sabathia’s weight is down, and the New York Yankees are counting on that to help his performance. The five-time All-Star said Sunday he’s shed 10 to 15 pounds and reported to spring training weighing about 290 – the same as a year ago when he pitched brilliantly early in the season but not nearly as effective down the stretch, when he appeared to be much heavier. After winning 13 of his first 17 decisions, Sabathia finished 19-8 overall with a 3.00 ERA. The Yankees rewarded him with a contract extension that added $30 million and one season to his existing contract. General manager Brian Cashman later arranged a meeting with Sabathia to discuss the importance of the 31-year-old watching his weight as he gets older. Continue reading
