Yanks rip Rays, Granderson breaks hand
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Yankees halted a two-game slide Friday night with a very expensive victory that might have an added price tag. In the middle of a 9-4 beating of the Rays in front of 17,825 at Tropicana Field the Yankees watched Curtis Granderson exit after getting hit… Continue reading

Yanks win, but Grandy breaks finger, Phelps hurt too

Rapid Reaction: Yankees 9, Rays 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — And the hits just keep on coming, 11 in the game by the Yankees and one more to the gut of the team when Curtis Granderson, who missed the first 38 games of the season with a broken right forearm after being hit by a pitch, got plunked again in the fifth inning and suffered a broken left pinkie, casting a deep pall over what should have been a joyous 9-4 victory. And just moments after that announcement, the Yankees suffered another scare when David Phelps caught a line drive off the bat of Ben Zobrist on what appeared to be his right forearm, and was removed from the game. Continue reading

Tex nears Bronx return; Trenton next
Mark Teixeira will take his show on the road to Trenton next week. After that, he is hoping to return to the Bronx. Teixeira took six more at-bats in a simulated game Friday at the Yankees’ Tampa complex and pronounced his injured right wrist healthy and ready to go. Continue reading
Rehab assignment is next step for Yankees’ Teixeira
TAMPA — Curtis Granderson was the first one back from the disabled list and it appears Mark Teixeira will be the second, with Kevin Youkilis a close third. “He could start a rehab [assignment] Tuesday in Trenton [Double-A],’’ general manager Brian Cashman said yesterday after Teixeira worked out at the Yankees… Continue reading

Yankees’ Pineda takes the next step in rehab process
TAMPA — Pitching has been the reason the Yankees have thrived into the middle of the season’s second month, even with Andy Pettitte, Ivan Nova and Joba Chamberlain on the disabled list. There is the possibility the staff could get stronger if Michael Pineda continues to progress. “He threw great… Continue reading

Yankees’ Mark Teixeira could begin rehab assignment Tuesday
The final hurdle for Mark Teixeira to clear is a successful completion of a minor league rehab assignment. He has been taking some swings during extended spring training. This has allowed him to bat from both sides of the plate as he wanted, but now it’s time for Teixeira to face live game action. According to Eric Boland of Newsday, Teixeira could begin rehab assignment as soon as next Tuesday. Word is Teixeira, who has hit in sim games this week & took BP today in Tampa, could be headed to Double A Trenton Tues for rehab assignment — Erik Boland (@eboland11) May 23, 2013 If Teixeira does in fact do so, he could be back with the Yankees by the first week of June. That would be a substantial boost for the already successful Yankees. New York is currently in first place in the American League East. Teixeira should only serve to help them maintain that first place spot. The Yankees have been without Teixeira for the entire season so far. He suffered a sev… Continue reading

First Pitch: First ‘big’ series of 2013
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — There is no longer any argument that the Yankees, at 28-18 and atop the AL East by a game despite having nearly a dozen players on the disabled list, have overperformed. And one could certainly make the argument that the Tampa Bay Rays, who a year ago had the same 28-18 record and led the division by a game, have underperformed, thanks in large part to their 5-10 start. But one thing no one can dispute is that despite how well the Yankees have played through their adversity, once again no one is running away with the AL East, which remains as tight as Tom Jones’ pants.
